The Explanation

[ Disclaimer;; I'm not fully sure if this has been done in any platform before but this is just a story based off of a dream I had recently, so if I'm not the first to write a story like this then credits to whoever did it before me. Thank you and I hope you enjoy :).  ]

When you grow up you wish to be chosen, by someone to love and cherish, by friends to keep near and dear, and by your peers to be one of the people worthy of being well known, none of this is promised but that doesn't stop one from wishing they could be a part of each and every one.

To be chosen in this new horrifying world however is not something you want.

You are chosen at random, you enter the, not so rewarding, competition at age ten.

It's a game

A constant one that has you second guessing every move, every word, and every person in your life, even though it is only once a year, it sits in the back of people's minds, something always haunting them until the annual day comes around.

From age ten to eighteen you are at risk of being chosen to be a hider, however after the age of eighteen you are at risk of being a seeker.

Now you're thinking, this is hide and seek?

Well, yes and no.

A hider is a person that is to last a whole night without being captured by your seeker, if the seeker gets you you're taken to a place that only the government has knowledge of and people that are usually retired there after their night of horrors are never heard of again.

Hiders can work together but it isn't usually something most do.

A seeker is a person that is chosen to hunt the hiders. There are only two per year in every town. It could be a teacher, a parent, a grandparent, really anyone you encounter in day to day life or even someone you don't know in the slightest.

The downside of the game is that you don't know if you're a hider or a seeker until the evening of. You can't tell anyone or you automatically lose.

You don't know the other hiders or the two seekers either, until twelve p.m., which is when the game commences.

Outsiders of the chosen hiders and seekers cannot know even when the game has started, you cannot rely on any outside help, you rely on yourself or the other hiders.

The seekers however are not allowed to help one another, so the hiders have a bit more of an advantage, and a higher chance at making it through the night.

Once you participate you are at lower risk at being chosen to participate again but seeing as there need to be four hiders and two seekers per year, you never truly know if you are safe or not.
