EXTRAORDINARY BEGINNINGS
When the soul has departed, what is a body? When the warmth leaves the blood and the limbs become stiff, it is a ghoulish thing. Everything science can measure is still there - every atom - yet it isn't the same at all. The soul had been recalled to our maker and what is left is simply bones and flesh.
His golden eyes that once danced in the sunlight were vacant and staring, straight into my soul, ripping into my conscience. His once warm complexion was cold to my touch, and I could feel the life draining out of him, bit by bit. His mouth that was so quick to smile at my jokes laid stiff.
So as I use my body to move him from the floor, feeling his dead weight, guilt ripping my heart apart, I know that my body isn't me - simply a necessary vessel for my life. Tears welled up in my eyes, threatening to fall at any moment. I glance around at the campsite. It was littered with human bone, and was exulting a smell of death. Why wouldn't it? The world believed that there had been no survivors in the plane crash.
But they hadn't spotted a lone figure, a little girl just a mere age of seven, kneeling next to her brother, wishing she had been taken instead.
There had been one survivor. The one who had endured starvation and exhaustion for nineteen days, still surviving against all odds. But she had reached the brink. She could no longer take it. During the brutal nineteen days, she'd experienced betrayal like no other, hunger and exhaustion, even watching her own family members crumble down and succumb to their injuries.
I felt my tears streaming down my face, rolling down my cheeks continuously. It was more than crying, it was the kind of desolate sobbing that comes from a person drained of all hope. I sank to my knees at the tiny grave, not caring for the damp mud. My tears mingled with the rain and my gasping wails echoed around the campsite. The pain that flowed from me was as palpable was the frigid fall wind that slapped across my face like long tentacles.
It's all my fault.
--------------------------------------------------
I step onto the cool pavement as the wind roared in my ears. Kids my age surrounded me, but I only had my eyes on a single target.
One.
Two.
Three.
I dashed forward, pushing all others in front of me aside. Although I had convinced myself I was ready, I clearly wasn't. From the corner of my eye, I spotted a kid with an engine quirk zooming past all of us, heading straight for the robots.
The robots glared down at us, their red lazer eyes humming with energy, as if to say: You can't beat us. Don't bother to try.
The kid with the engine quirk zigzagged forward and sent a kick towards the bot's upper parts. The bot immediately fell into pieces that rained down on me. I quickly caught hold of a particularly large piece of metal and held it in my arms. I mumbled thanks to the engine kid and scuttled towards other targets. I whipped my head around. Present Mic told us to avoid the ones that didn't give any points. I was so engaged in my thoughts I didn't notice the shadow looming behind me.
I spun on my heel and quickly kicked myself off the ground with my toes.
Transfer the weight to your arms.
I hopped up onto the bot's robotic arm. I felt the wind rushing in my hair and the adrenaline of a fight pumping in my veins.
BAM!!
I sent a fist flying towards the robots neck area. I disconnected the wire there that shock-circuited my metallic attacker immediately.
One down.
Still have points to gain...
My eyes closed in on a bot, identifying it as the one that gave extra points. I made a beeline for it, my legs moving with a faster speed now.
I still held on to that big piece of metal, but I could feel it weighing down on me. I had to hold on to it.
The bot whirred its head around to face me.
"Sorry!" And those were the last words it heard before it lost its balance due to my punch to its stubby legs. It crashed against the buildings and I quickly disconnected the three wires.
Two down.
"You have a total of two minutes left!" The shrill voice of Present Mic rang through the speakers.
My eyes shone with determination. I had to do this. My eyes found their way to a new target. I tossed my metal fragment towards the bot. I spotted a small figure of a boy scurrying away from the raining parts.
He turned round to face me. His cheeks were red from running, and he huffed out two words that even I could hear from a distance, "thank you!"
His voice had a squeaky edge to it. It seemed he was nervous. I quickly turned around to find myself facing another robot. I quickly picked up the metal piece and slashed it towards the bot. I used that moment of confusion and crept behind it, dislodging the wires.
"30 seconds left!" Present Mic reminded us.
Four.
"Come on... I need more points to guarantee a spot in the Hero course..." I mumbled away, ignorant to the large robot zooming its way towards me.
