Insomnia.

I carried on screaming, oblivious to my mother, who looked positively perplexed and horrified. I eventually stopped when my voice started to become painful and I sat up, my hands wrapped around my knees.

“What’s wrong?” My mother murmured, still down next to me. She was shaking, her  limbs trembling as she moved.  

“I, I-err—mmm” I stuttered, the words coming out in coarse whispers

“I love you, you know that? Whatever happens to you, I will be here right by your side. I’ll get you better honey, I promise” My mother sighed. She kissed me on the head before exiting the room. I managed to stand, my arms and legs trembling furiously. I glanced at my dressing table mirror. I had angry, red blotches under my eyes and cheeks from the crying, tear tracks still drying. I didn’t dare glance out my window, for fear he would be there. I shivered, changed out of my school uniform and went downstairs.

Later on, I climbed in to bed, dreading sleep. My mother kissed me goodnight, turned off my main light, and left me to my nightmares. I lay there, staring at the ceiling, forcing my eyes open. But slowly, very, very slowly I drifted off into a dark oblivion…
