Tom awoke to the sounds of chirping birds and a beam of sunlight engulfing her bed and causing her to squint until she adapted to the brightness. The light made a hint of navy blue appear on her mostly black bed sheet and the sight was alluring enough to keep her in bed. Tom had a rather combusted room which consisted of a small oak wood bed, a large bookshelf stacked with books in every space, a black wardrobe and a worn out side table. Suddenly there were two deafening knocks which almost made her jump out of bed. Then click and swing, the door opened and not surprisingly it was her older step sister standing with a cold expression etched upon her sunburnt face and her arms folded in an attempt to mock patience. “Fine, Loki”, said Tom already fed up of her stand-offishness. Loki was considerably tall, she had curly blonde hair and intimidating facial expressions. Without paying a heed to Loki’s presence, Tom scuttled across the deep blue carpet to the restroom and slammed the door shut. Already panic encroached her and she was left with a negative mindset for the first day of highschool. She walked towards the sink and perceived her pitiful state. Her skin seemed pale and lifeless than ever and her eyelids were swollen due to sleep deprivation but she still had the same dark brown eyes and black disordered shoulder-length hair which was the only article of her appearance that she was fond of.

Tom walked to school since it was at a rather short distance from her house. She reached pretty early and got to her classes without speaking or any company until lunch period arrived and she scuttled towards the yard area and sat at the abandoned bench located under the ebony trees. She scorned at the burnt waffle that Loki had packed and her appetite ceased. She sat there cold-shouldered with her nose in a book until two individuals walked up to her. Birb and Walt, she already knew about them from last year but what did they want from her? Did she forget something important? Was her face messed up or was it the waff-cadre shirt that she was wearing? She slowly put the book down on her lap and looked over her shoulders awkwardly and gave them a forced smile. “You’re Tom, right?” asked Birb. Tom nodded her head. Birb was probably as tall as Tom, she had long light brown hair, a freckled face and gleaming blue eyes. Walt was around 5 inches taller than her, he wore glasses and always spoke wisely and with discretion. “Would it be reassuring for you to be annexed at our bench with us?” queried Walt. “I would..like that..sure”, replied Tom as she slid her backpack over her right shoulder and clutched the book in her left hand. They headed towards the prepossessing spherical bench made up of aspen wood.
Could this be my great perhaps? Do I finally have friends? Tom thought to herself. Nonetheless Tom couldn’t help but smile through the entire conversation . She was having internal fits of euphoria and the bright blue sky and cozy weather added to her euphoria. Tom finally had friends!

School ended and now Tom had reached home. For the first time she was ecstatic at school but would the ecstasy last? Tom halted at the threshold and was flooded with thoughts of what ifs. What if it was just short-term acquaintanceship? What if they talked to me because I looked helpless? What if they were just being nice? Am I a sorrowful mediocre? Am I inferior to everyone else? Every thought was glum. Tom bolted to her room, buried her face in the bed sheet and shedded a few tears until the sounds of chirping birds, mobilized vehicles and the television lulled her to sleep.
