Chapter Six: Expecting The Unexpected

Start from the beginning

"No!" I said as I walked inside my room and closed the door. The moment I walked in, I opened the box I put Amara's necklace in and held it in my hands. How can I give this to her without being a total creep? Not that I care what she thinks... okay so I care. Her words are just so raw and honest. She says whats on her mind and I like that. Her words did really get to me.

Amara... why are you on my mind so much?

Amara Abdullahi

"Ok breathe in and out Amran." I said to my sister as she rubbed her belly which is small but seems to look bigger day by day. She's now 2 months pregnant which I still can't believe. Also Ramadan is coming around in a couple of days which makes me happy because I just love the feeling of knowing that Ramadan is in the air. I mean it's just so peaceful and that feeling alone is enough to make anyone smile. Enough to even make me smile and I rarely do that.

"Wow I think I'm starting to get a little big!" Amran said as she looked at herself in the mirror.

"Well your pregnant girl so get used to it." Her friend, Farah said as she smiled at my sister. Farah is like another sister to all of us, I mean her and Amran have been friends since the third grade. She's always been there for her and even for me and the rest of our siblings. Especially after Ma was diagnosed and Baba walked out on us all of those years ago. I can't believe he hasn't even contacted us after everything that went down. I remember always asking why he didn't care for us enough to stay and get sober, why he chose alcohol over his own kids. I guess I'll never find out.

"I know." Amran said as she covered her belly and walked back into the kitchen. Amran, Farah, Amelia and I are having a girl's day which we haven't had in forever. "I still can't believe you're pregnant. I'm happy for you and Nur!" Amelia said as she smiled at Amran.

"Thanks, babe."

"So let's talk about girl stuff! Like who's that guy that I always see staring at you Mara?" Farah said as she brought in ice cream and chips for all of us. What guy?... Perhaps is she talking about Kenny? When does he even stare at me? She's confused.

"What?" I said with a laugh.

"No seriously for the past two months, ever since we heard about Amran's pregnancy, he'd always be here hanging with Hamid but I'd always see him looking at you!" She added as she gave me googling eyes. Again, when does Kenny look at me? And why would he look at me? Doesn't he have fangirls throwing themselves at him? Impossible.

"He does look at you a lot Mara." My sister stated as she took a spoonful of the Cookies & Creme Ice Cream. Amy also nodded her head in agreement. What are they even talking about?

"Whatever I don't want to talk about Kenny!" I blurted out loud. Wait did I just blurt out my nickname for him? Man that nickname was suppose to only stay in my head!

"Kenny? I thought his name is Zubair..." Farah said with a confused look on her face. "It is but I call him Kenny. You know Barbie and Ken? He reminds me of him, except he's the middle eastern version of Ken." I said with a shrug and also took a scoop of the ice cream.

"Aw you guys have nicknames! You're the Barbie to his Ken!" Amelia teased, the others laughed along with her. "Ugh shut up! I don't like him anyways. Isn't this suppose to be a halal place? Stop talking about boys! Haram, haram, haram!" I said with a shake of my head. Thought otta shut them up for sure.

"You're right... so what should we talk about?"

"Baby names?" Farah suggested.

"Aigoo, Nur and I aren't in that stage yet." My sister said as she muttered some other things in Korean.
