And so it Begins

Lucy was cleaning her apartment with the windows wide open to let in a cool breeze when she heard a knock at the door. She assumed it had to be Levy or Wendy,  seeing as they were the only friends she had who wouldn't kick the door down and waltz in like they owned the place.

She fixed the strap of her tank-top and set her duster down, then walked over to the door to open it. Much to her surprise, it was neither of the two girls standing there. She met the green eyes of a calm and collected male, his handsome smile taking her breath away as it usually did. "Loke? You opened your gate again! How long ago did you do that?"

The male pushed his glasses into place, "Just a few minutes ago. I didn't want to pop in out of nowhere!" He smiled in a friendly way, as if it wasn't common for him to do just that and surprise her. "You do that all the time!" She shouted, a little irritated that he could really brush off all the times he arrived on his own. Loke chuckled, "True, but I've never done it in your home. I respect your privacy!" The male sounded proud of himself, he even looked proud. His chin was held up, and the rose in his hand was held delicately with his long fingers. Lucy pretended not to notice the rose. If this was a game he was playing, she didn't want to give him the satisfaction of playing along. Unfortunately for her, she couldn't pretend for long. Loke brought the rose up between them, and it was now right  in front of her chin as she stared into his wildly intoxicating eyes. Loke tilted his head and smiled charmingly, "May I come in?"

Lucy huffed and took the rose, "You know you're not going to win me over with a smile and a flower right?" She stepped aside to make room for him to enter. Loke walked in, "I know! But that isn't going to stop me from trying." He turned to her as she closed the door. Lucy crossed her arms, "So what exactly are you here for? Not that I dislike your company... I'm just curious. Usually you only show up when I'm in danger." Admittedly, she likes that about him. He always seemed to make an entrance right when she needed him most, even if she didn't call for him. He always seemed to know. The lion spirit leaned against the table with a hand, "That's just it. I never spend quality time with you. I would be lying if I said that doesn't bother me." He seemed more serious now as opposed to the lighthearted and playful spirit she recognized as her Leo. "Why does it bother you all of a sudden?"

Loke pressed his lips together in silence for a moment as if he was thinking about what to say to her, "Well," he began, "I've always disliked it. I'm just finally doing something about it." His answer was a bit surprising. Had he really wanted a closer relationship with her? "Are... you just saying that to make me go on a date with you?" Lucy questioned, giving him a suspicious look. She expected him to respond with a laugh or a chuckle, maybe a cheeky grin with apologetic eyes that said 'Oops! You caught me!' But instead, he approached her, "You know I want more than friendship, Lucy. But I recognize that you're different from other women; that's part of what makes you so attractive..." he trailed off with a look in his eye, one that exposed his every thought regarding her attractiveness. However it wasn't too long before he continued more seriously, "If I can't have you romantically, which I'll still try, I at least want to make sure we have a strong friendship. So I know we have each other's backs through thick and thin... and we can make ourselves a better team."

Lucy gawked, "W-Wait... that's it? No... power of love, or you being my knight or protector?" Loke pushed his glasses into place, "I am your protector. And I'm doing what I need to do to make myself the best spirit in your arsenal."

Lucy bit her lip, trying to figure out what she was feeling. She always told Loke she wanted him to quit flirting... but now that he really wasn't flirting she didn't know how to feel. Could she really miss it? "Loke, you already are! You're a total powerhouse!" She smiled at him, "You may be a flirt, but that doesn't make you less valuable than the other spirits. In fact... I know I always tell you to quit it but... I guess I'm just now realizing how much I appreciate that flirty side of you for making me feel... good about myself." Loke gave her a confused look, "Wait... really?" Lucy nodded guiltily, "Natsu and Happy are always telling my I'm heavy and... I guess it got to me more than I realized. A-Anyway... you make me feel... confident? And I appreciate it—... I appreciate you."

Loke stared in shock as Lucy rubbed the back of her neck nervously. She was looking down with a faint blush, heart pounding. Loke lifted her chin, looking at her with gentle eyes as he spoke calmly as if speaking in any other way might ruin the moment, or frighten her. "So... even if we are just friends... you want me to continue flirting?"

Lucy puffed out her cheeks and jerked her head away, looking away from him, "Yes! Okay? Just... don't change the things that make you Loke!"

This brought a warm feeling to the spirit's heart, and he poked her cheeks to blow the air out. She looked at him again, just in time to see his face inches from hers, "Let's make a deal then," Loke started, "I promise I'll never change... as long as you promise to never change either." Lucy pulled away and took a deep breath, collecting herself. "Yeah..." she said, "Okay, Loke. I promise."
