October, 1982

I loathe the bus. It stinks. It's slow. It's plain shitty.

These are the only thoughts preoccupying my mind when I see the old rusty bus round the corner of my street. I take a deep breath and hold it before I step onto the bus, and the moment I release it, the damp and moldy smell of the bus, mixed with the unpleasant smell of sweat welcomes me.

I scan the bus for a vacant seat, and the only available seats are next to Stinky Alvin, Geeky Lynn, Aloof Eden and weirdo Trevor. Oh, and the heartthrob of my school- Mark Spencer.

The seat next to Mark is not really an option, it's always reserved for his girlfriend. His Girlfriend of the month. Like all good looking, spoilt rich douchebags, Mark is a playboy, known for his extensive record in dating, and soon enough, he will run out of girls to date in school. Possibly the whole town

I glance at Trevor, with his barf coloured Khaki pants covered legs stretched on the seat, and move ahead. Geeky Lynn has her head digged into a comic book, her bag occupying the vacant seat. Stinky Alvin is not even an option. Aloof Eden it is, then. Eden has plugged his headphones into his CD Walkman, mouthing the lyrics, nodding his head along to the beat. His shaggy brown hair cover the most part of his eyes, but I see his gleaming hazel eyes staring at me.

"SIT DOWN GIRL" The bus driver yells, glaring at me through the mirror. But before I go any further, Mark offers me the seat next to him.

"I-uh.." I look around nervously, and back at the driver, and decide to accept the seat.

Oh my God. I can't belive I am sitting next to Mark West. And I don't mean it in the 'Oh my God, I am sitting next to the hottest boy in school' way.
I mean it in the 'Oh my God, I am sitting next to the jerk who got one of my friends pregnant in Sophomore year and ruined her life' way.

Alison was Mark's first girlfriend. And his longest relationship. They dated for a year, until one day when she got pregnant. Her twin, Madison, my other bestfriend, has hated Mark ever since. And so have all of us.

Once the news of her getting pregnant spread in school, she had to move to her Aunt's place in Nebraska. Away from everyone who knew her. She gave birth there to little Jamie, but she is still struggling to juggle both- look after him and study.

It was because of Mark that Madison got seperated from Ali, because of him, that Alison had to grow up so fast. And Maddie hated him for it.

I did, too.

From the corner of my eye, I see Mark staring at me, and I look away when I catch his eye. His gleaming blue eyes, with the sun shining on them make him look creepy and intense. I edge away from him and pressed into the seat handle further.

This is going to be a long, long ride.

"Maddie!" I run towards the tall blonde who I am proud to call my bestfriend. As usual she looks like a true Betty, with her smooth and shiny hair let down and sitting on her shoulders. Her cute summer frock flattering her swimmer's body. She turns, and flashes me a goofy grin.

In a few minutes, Clarence and Vic join us, and we walk into the school building. "Tim and I went upto my lake cabin for the weekend, and it was so beautiful up-"
"Um..hey!"
Maddie's interruption is caused by a breathless Mark, as he stops behind us and grabs me by my shoulder. I lose my balance a little and fall a few steps behind by his force. Quickly, Maddie supports me, and saves me from an embarrassing fall.

"What is it?!" Maddie narrows her eyes at Mark.

"She forgot her bottle on the bus." He tosses the bottle at us and walks away coolly.

"You know, you could have given it to me in 10 minutes in History!" I yell behind him.

He tilts his head back and with a very mischievous smile, says, "You're in my  class? I hadn't noticed."

"WHAT AN ASS" Maddie murmurs angrily. She then looks suspiciously at me and points an accusatory finger at me, "You sat next to him?" Uh oh. "The only other seat was next to Stinky Alvin. I lie smoothly. Clar chuckles and says, "In that case, you are forgiven."

"Why does he use the school bus anyway? Isn't he super rich?" Vic points out. "Last year he crashed his expensive convertible into a tree. His Dad wants him to ride on the bus as a punishment." I say.

"Hm..good punishment." Maddie smiles, obviously pleased.  "Heyy...I also use the bus." I roll my eyes and shove Maddie's arm.

Maddie forgets about the whole Mark incident soon enough and talks about her date with Tim in the woods.
"It was so magical. At one point it began to rain and we had to run back to the cabin, hand in hand. Then he cooked dinner for me, it was just spaghetti, but we still enjoyed it. We lit a fire and all, too."

The more she speaks about her magical weekend, the more I feel as if my worse fears are coming true.

My stomach is churning, and my mind, whirling . I stop paying attention to her. Only flashbacks are running through my mind, and the horrible feeling of deja vu is gripping me with fear.

It all came to a stop when Maddie said it.
