S.E HINTON CLAIMED THAT C. THOMAS HOWELL (PONYBOY CURTIS) FAKE CRIED DURING DALLY AND JOHNNY'S DEATH BUT REALLY CRIED WHEN GETTING HIS HAIR CUT.
Apparently, Howell's tears were not real when watching both of his on-screen best friends die, but whenever he was backstage getting his hair cut and bleached for the hair cut scene in the movie, he actually shed some tears for his hair. S.E Hinton tweeted it after the movie and thought it was funny, almost as funny as I find it, and I actually found this old newspaper article about it.
