#21 - It's Mum, Not Mom

When American authors don't educate themselves on British customs, e.g. the school system, language, currency.

They decide to set a story in the UK. Great! I'm ready to read a lovely tale set in my home country, and-

The main character ruins it by saying something like "Mom, can I have ten dollars? I'm gonna be late for homeroom!"

There are three things wrong with that. Number one, in the UK it's MUM. NOT MOM. Number two, we use POUNDS (or quid if you're being casual. NEVER dollars. There are 70 cents (at the time of writing) to every pound so it's inaccurate anyway). Number three, homeroom does not exist in the UK. If you're setting your story in a foreign school system, get ready to do some serious research, because holy crap there is a massive difference between English and American school.

Also, I hate it when Americans presume all Brits are either really posh aristocrats, chavs living in council flats, stereotypically Welsh, or stereotypically Scottish. And when they don't know the difference between Great Britain and the United Kingdom.
