"Welcome recruit. State your name and assigned position."

The woman had flaming red hair, which indicated she was of high status. People weren't allowed to do things that would distinguish themselves from others unless they had earned a reason to be distinguishable. Red hair was a symbol of power and ability, and given that she was a part of the Empire's soldiery, this probably meant she was a --

"General Ota!" Another voice called out, snapping (Y/n) from her trance before she had a chance to answer the question. A male approached the pair carrying something in his hands. It was a circular object with a screen and touch-pad, probably a controller of some sort. His brown hair glistened with a thin layer of sweat and he looked like he had been running - or better, training. Everything in his appearance screamed of fighter. His sharp gaze, his stance, his muscular arms...

"Captain Hall, what a pleasure to see you. What brings you here?" The General asked the man, ignoring the third presence in the room for the time being.

"Well, I wanted to go over the latest reports with you but I can see that you are busy." The man replied, now eyeing the shorter female. "And you would be?"

"Ah yes, I was getting to that. Please state your name and assigned position."

"I'm (Y/n) (L/n), recruit patroller."

"Patroller, huh?" The male - Captain Hall - stepped forward. "I'm Captain Hall, responsible for the recruits this term. General, we'll discuss the details of the report later. I'll take care of the recruit myself. You, follow me." He simply said and turned around. With nowhere else to go and no desire to screw up on her first few minutes in the soldiery, (Y/n) quickly followed him into the double doors.

"This building isn't where you'll be staying. It's mostly business related, with offices and conference rooms, but it also houses the top of the soldiery. And of course, we have this floor, which is designed for the initiation of our recruits." He spoke, but (Y/n) couldn't really pay attention as she was stuck between awing at the large corridor and at the man beside her. They first stopped at what looked like yet another waiting area, but instead of the usual chairs there were two lonely couches. The Captain motioned for the girl to sit. As he started the tests, which involved basically taking the girl's pressure and blood sample, she took the opportunity to study him. His hands moved swiftly across the equipment which had been discretely stored in a cabinet nearby. "So, do you usually do this for the other recruits?" The female inquired.

"No." Was his simple reply. He looked up towards her face and (Y/n)'s heart almost stopped. The male's brown eyes were intimidating yet captivating, a shade she'd never quite seen before; it was like melted dark chocolate. (Y/n) winced as she felt something cold touch her chest. With a mixture of surprise and relief, she analyzed the old-fashioned object. Among so much progress in the medical field, the stethoscope was certainly a strange instrument to be kept over time. Perhaps its quirky appearance inspired doctors to preserve it, but even so, anything from the past - especially material things - were rare. Before she could wonder more about the time before the Empire, Captain Hall broke the silence.

"Breathe in for me."

The girl gathered air as if it were her last time. She couldn't bare to look at him anymore, it felt intimate. Hall, on the other hand, finally took the moment to study the girl's features. Her delicate chin, her fragile frame, her small hands and bony arms. Most of the recruits were not like her, for sure, but at present the soldiery was recruiting just about anyone. If her personality were anything like her body, it would be a challenge to get this girl used to a soldier's life, especially if she aspired to become a trooper. The best of the best.

After finalizing the general health checkup, (Y/n) was made to repeat an oath of loyalty to the Empire and the Emperor. Loyalty, justice and endurance. The Empire's three values. The people must be loyal to the Empire, and as the soldiery protects the people, they must be loyal to the people and the Empire. The soldiers have power above that of citizens, and must therefore be just in their judgments and actions. Endurance. This was also something expected of all people, but especially of the soldiers. There were only rumors of the intense and brutal training that army men had to go through in the past, and although the wars had changed over the years, endurance was still a vital principle for the Reborn Federation.

Captain Hall took (Y/n) through the back of the building and into a sheltered area which was designed for her activities during the next years of her life. Because of many disputes on the use of artificial intelligence in wars, a great part of the current war lifestyle mimicked more archaic designs. Soldiers slept in cabins, meals were served in a common room, and 'leisure' activities included physical and mental strength training. More advanced technologies were restricted to weapons, and even those were regulated. Before he left (Y/n) to find her way, the Captain said only one thing:

"Oh, and call me Eric."
