Everything was a blur after that, Fu Cheng couldn't remember much but once he woke up again he saw his room. A vague memory of him telling his mother that he wanted to come home popped up.

Unlike the previous cheerful atmosphere in their home, there was nothing but dread. They were extremely close with each other so it was expected things would turn out this way. They never expected such a thing when they let their guard down. Beside his bed was the forlorn figure of his sister who once again cried herself to sleep, they blamed themselves for what had happened. Their baby brother ended up being shot right before their eyes and they didn't even know it till their mother was crying out his name.

That day she saw Fu Cheng fall, her mind instantly cleared while her heart roared in aggression, stalking towards the man who shot their brother. Continuously, she punched the man below her who could only drown in his blood and pain. She screamed profanity at the man multiple times and wrung the corpse only to be pulled off by her other brother who knocked her out cold. He looked at the mangled head of the corpse before taking out the pistol in his holster, hallowing out all the bullets, each hitting the same place — right beside the heart.

After going to his sister, he took his weeping mother away while their father immediately took their brother to the hospital. Fear and anger had overwhelmed him to the point that he couldn't properly control the functions of his body.

His sister in his arms and the weeping figure of his mother had startled him, he made his way to the room their family shared to at least try and put their minds at rest. He knocked them out and laid them gently on the bed and sluggishly moved to the chair in the balcony and drunk till his throat burned with the alcohol and his eyes stung with the cold of the night.

The next few weeks, the family was no longer the warm little shuttle that they would go into. Their mother had gone into shock while his sister had gone out drinking again in an attempt to drown her sorrows. He and his father immediately worked on Fu Cheng's case as they visited his room every day. Currently, their mother was staying with Fu Cheng today so they had fewer worries.

5 months have passed by in a flash and all of them had become thoroughly agitated.

What if he doesn't wake up?
What if he'll sleep forever?
What if he dies without us there?

Paranoia and grief had demolished the walls that held their mental and physical well-being and turned them into breathing husks.

And like that, a year passed.

One evening when the family had finished their dinner and began to clean up, the emergency phone a few steps from the table rang, all 4 panicked as they dreaded the bad news they were gonna hear. As their father picked up the phone, his expression changed from fear to joy, and then relief. Once the call ended he immediately told them the situation and they bolted right to the hospital.

"He's awake."

Nothing could describe the joy they felt as they saw their precious little prince rise from his bed. They were overjoyed only to be sent back to hell after tasting the sweet nectar of hope. His life expectancy was 10 years at most, with his frail body, he could no longer walk. He was lucky enough to be able to survive such a critical wound but lost control of his lower body in the process. Because of the long mission, his bones had weakened and when he fell down after the shot, his sacrum had been fractured. Fu Cheng didn't mind, he was gonna protect them no matter what.

In a flash, 11 years had passed, he was now relying on his willpower just to survive and it was extremely taxing to his corroding body. His brother married his fiancé and his sister adopted 2 children for herself. Both their parents have retired and were now spending their days in the humble home they've been in since the very start.

As soon as the 4th year passed, he was no longer able to lift his arms properly. He used to wheel himself to the bathroom but now he was taken care of by his family. In the 7th year, he wasn't able to eat food anymore, they had to place a feeding tube for him to get his nutrients. The 9th year was horrible, his family had to witness the seizures he'd have in the nighttime. In the 10th year, he could only move his head.

They knew Fu Cheng was close.
He wanted out from the hardships, but their little prince pushed on to complete his little wish.

Protect his family until his last breath.

That night, the day before the new year, his siblings and parents gathered around his bed. All of them tried to keep a strong front but they all crumbled at the sight of the once beautiful Prince who now looked no more than a sack of bones.
He looked awful.

He didn't have the heart to allow his nieces and nephews to see his state as soon as the 9th year started.

They had their last night together, they spoke their last conversation as tears dropped down the black duvets Fu Cheng had requested when it was his 9th year.

He accepted death.

"I will always love you all, I'll be watching each and every one of you, to keep you all safe."

He couldn't help but break down as he said those words.

He was going to leave his family, for good.

No one looked up after he said those words but they went to touch his hand.

Cold.

And yet he smiled through death, carrying all his regrets.

"Goodnight. Happy New Year."

A New Year would have brought joy to their family, but only sobs of grief were heard from the small house under the pale snow.

He never experienced the New Year as his soul was swept away by death.
