It was a normal day for Shouto, the dark comfort of his apartment embracing him in a familiar and friendly manner. The sunshine peeked through the thin curtains that covered his windows, but it wasn't enough to disturb the apartment's natural dim setting. Todoroki liked it this way, despite his parents claiming that it "made him depressed," which he continually denied.
His bare feet scuffed against the hardwood floor as a yawn escaped from his mouth. 10:00 am already? Crap, the store is probably crowded by now. He thought to himself while grabbing a banana off the kitchen counter and proceeding to eat it. After graduating from high school, Todoroki had managed to land a job working from home and today was one of the few days that he wasn't going to be forced to stare at his laptop for 10 hours. A mandatory trip to the grocery store was put in place because of this. Usually, Todoroki would have woke up by 6:00 am to be at the store by 7:00 am to avoid crowds but last night was especially rough on him. He spent a good five hours binging season one of Vampire Knight and he needed the rest after that emotional rollercoaster.
Okay okay... think Shouto. Do we absolutely have to go to the store today? His eyes shifted in the direction of both the pantry and the fridge. A sigh followed his gaze, he didn't even have to check either storage unit; he knew they were both completely wiped clean. The young male lazily made his way to the shower. Five minutes later, he was basically ready for the trip to the grocery store. There was one time in particular that Todoroki had decided to travel to the store. On this trip, in particular, he bumped into an old classmate, and from that day on he vowed to himself that whenever he decided to go out into the world, he would attempt to look as unrecognizable as possible. His solution consisted of an oversized hoodie and a pair of glasses that he only really wore when he was staring at his laptop. Don't take Shouto too seriously; this definitely wasn't the best he could do, he just couldn't be bothered to come up with something elaborate. It is also important to note that his hair was still half white half red.
After grabbing his keys and wallet, Todoroki promptly walked out the door and towards the grocery store. The store itself was more of a small local market compared to a big company store like Walmart. But of course, like everything else in his life, Shouto had picked this market as his "go-to" for a multitude of reasons:
1. It's nearby. Practically a 5-minute walk.
2. Smaller market = fewer people
3. Walmart is dumb anyway.
4. Five. Minute. Walk.
Upon arriving at the market, the young male had found that the market wasn't nearly as busy as he previously imagined; which was great news. He carefully roamed the aisles, shopping basket in hand, browsing through the many brands of soba noodles the store had to offer. Todoroki basically lived off soba and instant ramen at his apartment. It's not that he wasn't capable of cooking, he just simply couldn't find the energy or motivation to try to actually cook for himself. Plus, the processed food brought him comfort unknowingly. When he was still in high school, Shouto had a small friend group that he felt he could rely on for quite some time. Little did he know the friend group he had trusted only wanted to hang out with him for his family's wealth. Once Todoroki had discovered this, he quickly cut ties with everyone in the group; he felt betrayed. However, his actions only brought more pain and his "friends" quickly began to spread rumors throughout the school. Loner. Before he knew it, he was outcasted, and the only way he was able to defend himself --- Pathetic. was through acting like he wasn't affected by the harsh words of his classmates. Die.
Through the remainder of that particular year, Shouto had trouble stomaching food; his saving grace was instant ramen and cold soba. Although they weren't the healthiest of foods, they were the only foods he was able to keep down. At times it felt like soba and ramen were the only things that would never change on him and he found an odd comfort in knowing that. He grabbed a few packs of instant ramen and tossed them gently into the shopping basket. Walking down the aisle a little further, he noticed a familiar brand of soba; he might even call it his favorite brand of soba. Only one left? Might as well grab it and I'll stock up on a different brand. He extended his right arm outwards and reached for the last package before his hand made contact with another person's hand. Todoroki's body froze as he slowly turned his head in the direction of the stranger. Panic started to settle into the introvert's thoughts; he didn't prepare mentally to speak to anyone on this trip and the last time he spoke to a stranger was at least a few months ago. What on earth was he going to do?
"Oop! Sorry about that--" The green-haired stranger said while retracting his hand and looking over at the heterochromatic male. There was a small pause between the two males as their eyes met. Todoroki recognized the green mop on top of the stranger's head but he couldn't put a name to the face. Meanwhile, the other recognized Shoto almost immediately.
"Todoroki! Shoto Todoroki?!" He said with a smile on his face, "Wow! It's been a while! How are you?"
This was a complete nightmare and quite frankly the exact opposite of what Todoroki wanted. He had been so careful not to run into people and to keep a good distance away to avoid a situation like this. What the hell happened? Surely this wasn't his fault, right? Did he get too caught up in his thoughts about soba?
Crap...I can't remember his name. Why the hell does he have to know my name? Think! Think!
"We had a high school reunion party not too long ago. Iida and I tried to invite you but we couldn't find your phone number or email." A small laugh escaped from the stranger's lips, "But I guess that's not very surprising, you were always kind of quiet, even when we sat next to each other in class."
Izumi? No...That was one of our instructor's names... Miki? Mito? Mimi? Izu...
"We really didn't talk all that much though, to be honest, I was a little intimidated by you. I mean, could you blame me? You were one of the only students Bakugou didn't really pick on!"
Bakugou? Oh... well if that's the case then his name must be-- "Deku." Todoroki said with a monotone voice.
Another awkward silence blew past the two males; clearly, Shouto had gotten the name wrong. The extrovert brought a hand up to the back of his neck and let out a very breathy laugh.
"Oh, you don't have to call me that Shouto! You can call me by my last name Midoriya or my first name Izuku. Bakugou is the only one that called me that and I'm pretty sure he meant that as an insult..."
Oh thank god, he's stupid. "My bad... Midoriya." The heterochromatic male looked away awkwardly. It was kind of unbelievable that he was able to maintain eye contact with his old classmate for so long. "Y-you can take it. If you want." He said, gesturing towards the package of soba noodles.
Izuku shook his head, "No, you can have it," he grabbed the package off the shelf and handed it to Todoroki, "Consider it a gift for our newfound friendship."
Friendship? The word echoed in Shouto's mind. It almost sounded foreign to him; granted, he had removed that word from his vocabulary long ago. Irritation and annoyance began to build up within the introvert. What gave Izuku the right to assume they could be friends? He said it himself; they didn't talk to each other that much while they were in school. A small frown formed on Todoroki's lips as he snatched the package out of the other's hand. Something about this whole interaction was really starting to piss him off. Midoriya was almost a complete stranger to him, wasn't it rude to just insert himself into his life? A life in which Shouto was completely expecting to spend alone.
"Well, bye," Todoroki mumbled before turning around and walking in the direction of the checkout area. His shopping basket wasn't very full at all; definitely not enough food to last him a month or two. Damn it... I guess I'll have to come back at some point. I need to get out of here now.
Midoriya stood still in the aisle that Shouto had left him in, watching him walk away and start the checkout process. He felt dumbfounded by what had just happened, his old classmate had just rejected his friendliness. Izuku felt confused by how he should feel; upset or angry? His thoughts made him shake his head, there was no way he was going down without a fight. Something about the introvert really intrigued the extrovert and he decided that he was going to try his best to actually befriend Todoroki. This was going to be different than how they were in high school!
After both males had purchased their grocery items, they both began to walk out of the market. Before Shouto could even start walking in the direction of his apartment Midoriya slid in front of him blocking his path. "Hey! I was serious about the whole friendship thing. Maybe we can exchange phone numbers? Hang out sometime? I'm free all day tomorrow!" Izuku said with a smile on his face.
What is this guy's deal? Can't he take a hint? Oh well, guess I'll have to be straightforward. The mood immediately shifted between them as the heterochromatic male let out a sigh, "Look. I don't need friends so get lost, yeah?" His voice was stern despite all the anxiety that had built up within him. Todoroki didn't hesitate; he took a step aside and walked past the green-haired male.
