Here is a link to the YouTube video where I read aloud the story over a speedart of Cans himself. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/WxCMCivWVZw
'Dum dum-dum dum-dum, dum-dum dum,' Cans hummed in his mind to the tune of the music box as he curled up underneath the giant statue's monstrous and eroded head. He was cradled in the concave, dark space between the creature's arms, his skeletal tail laying over one of the limbs. Above his ear-less skull rested the handle of an umbrella. The wood stem at the end was jammed entirely into a hole in the rock, right where the statue's throat would be if it had a more defined shape. Or perhaps, it did at one point, long before the drips from the ceiling wore down any distinctive detail in the rock.
The umbrella itself was topped with red plastic, worn around the edges and sun-bleached in the back from its days on the surface, which Cans only knew because he once climbed up to rest on the monster's shoulders.
Cans yawned, exposing his long, slim teeth that fit perfectly against his jaw when closed, fully revealing their length and the potential damage the little skeleton cat could do if he wanted. Not to mention his magic, of course, which was much more dangerous, but he preferred to save it for the utmost circumstances.
His thoughts morphed to considering the recent events in the Underground, with the appearance of a kind human, calling themself Frisk, who had introduced an exciting chain of events into the timeline. The first of which being when he met them in the woods outside the door where he spoke to a stranger whenever the skeleton wanted to slack off from work, and he had a very unique first contact.
Cans was bored. Very bored. The cat was so unentertained, just laying inside his guard outpost, claws scratching aimlessly into the cold, brown wood that built up this cute little container that he stayed in while on the watch for the odd human being who might at any time come walking past him. He'd seen it happen six times already, so there was no doubt it would occur again eventually, but he knew it wouldn't be now. So he was comfortable to slack off and make sure his favorite blue jacket and white turtleneck were clear of lint and dust and dirt and other similar cleanliness issues. He preened just a few hours of the day, licking over his stark-white bones to keep them as pristine as they always were, just in case he met another human that he needed to im-purr-ess. That's what he was doing now, on his back, with his tongue licking up against the soft bone of his paws, when he heard a sound and paused to take it in.
Crunch, crunch.
Ooh, who could that be? Cans lifted his head at the unconnected vertebrae of his spine and, from his position lying on his back, staring up at the sky, rolled over on his bones and onto his paws, or whatever passed for them at this point. The skeletal cat in a blue jacket and black shorts with certifiably the most adorable pink slippers on his back feet took one elegant leap from his watch-post to the ledge that allowed him to look out into the forest and spot what was coming to visit him. Had he had ears rather than holes where they should've connected to him, he would've noticed that the direction from which the footsteps were coming was the direction from whence no monster came, though his head was faced towards Snowden. Luckily, he was smart enough to turn his head the other direction as well and spot a brown-haired creature dressed in a purple-striped blue shirt with similarly colored pants and black boots that came up their shins. Cans only took a moment to recognize that this being was not a monster, and was, in fact, a human. It was rather obvious. They had no scaly skin, no enlarged feet, no additional eyes. He couldn't see any abnormalities, any bones, and the only creature they resembled was a balding ape.
He hopped off of the wooden platform and down onto the slightly purple pathway before darting out of sight and into the thick tree line, weaving between the snow-covered roots with the elegance and skill that came with being a cat and the practice of someone who was often bored and needed a way to be entertained.
