One month ago...

Ruby paced by the door of her apartment anxiously. She had been there already for an hour or more waiting for a letter to arrive.

Yang, her sister, had been watching this amusedly from a nearby sofa. The two shared an apartment and had done so for a few years now.

"Walking back and forth won't make it come any faster!" Yang called to her younger sister. She had a grin on her face as she knew her words would fall on deaf ears.

"But how am I supposed to focus on anything else?" Ruby replied without breaking stride. "I've already been waiting for weeks."

The object in question was a letter that would tell if she was accepted into Beacon academy or not. Yang had received her letter a few days ago but nothing had come by for Ruby yet. The longer it took for anything to arrive, the more anxious she got. Ruby stopped and looked to Yang with a frightened expression. "What if they just forgot me!?"

This hadn't been the first time the girl had asked the question as was apparent with Yang's eye roll. Yang got up and embraced her sister, hoping to calm her down. "We already called the school. You weren't forgotten." The school had also refused to comment on wether she was accepted or not, a refusal that caused the current situation.

This did little to calm Ruby as she stiffened slightly in the embrace. "I know..." She finally sighed out.

Just as Ruby finished that statement the mail slot opened and several letters landed on the floor beside the two sisters. They looked at it for a few seconds before Ruby flew into action and started to go through them, hoping the letter she's been waiting for was finally here.

After going through them she sighed again, not having found the item she was waiting for. Yang, however, noticed a single letter having not been noticed by her younger sister. She picked it up and with a grin saw who it was from. "Well, I guess now we find out if they let-her in or not." She chuckled at her own pun.

Ruby spun around quickly and saw the letter in Yang's hand. Without even reacting to the poor joke she took the letter and ripped it open. She slowly pulled its contents out and looked at the piece of paper that would change her life for better or worse.

Yang saw the anxiety written all over Ruby's face and her expression softened. "Hey. If they let even me into Beacon, they'll definetly be keeping you." Ruby looked up to Yang and nodded softly before reading through the paper.

When Ruby finished she looked utterly defeated. Yang sighed and assumed the worst had happened. She pulled her sister into another hug. "It's okay. Who cares about Beacon anyways?"

Ruby grinned and held the letter up, letting Yang read the new for herself. Lilac eyes scanned through the page as the hug got tighter. Yang's expression lit up as she read through one specific part.

Dear Ruby Rose,
We are proud to say that you have been accepted into Beacon Academy.

Yang looked down at her sister with a wild grin. "You got in!" Ruby was laughing as she broke free from the embrace for a moment. "You should have seen your face! You really thought I didn't make it!" Yang rolled her eyes, "I knew you made it. I never once had a doubt in my little sis."

Ruby looked through the letter again, smiling brightly. Her silver eyes shined as she read the opening lines over and over again. "I actually made it..." It felt as if the weight of the world had been finally taken off her shoulders. She looked up to Yang, smiling still.

Yang just hugged Ruby again, chuckling. "Yup, now you just have to make it through it." Yang was teasing Ruby, proud of her little sister. "Hope you're ready. You've only got a month until Beacon starts."

Elsewhere...

Weiss was at the piano, passing the time as she awaited today's mail. This way she wouldn't be yelled for lounging around as she waited for the mail. She pulled a lot of strings to get into Beacon Academy and today should be the day that she got the letter she could show to her parents.

It wasn't due to grades that Weiss was forced to reach out into her contacts. It was more so that she didn't want her parents to find out she had done so. Beacon was her one chance at getting even a semblance of freedom from her family.

She was the heiress to the Schnee Energy Company. The largest in the world and supplier to most of the civilized world's power. But with the inheritance of this company, Weiss had a legacy to uphold. Going to one of the finest schools was a part of that plan.

As Weiss thought through this someone came into the music room and handed her a letter. She promptly nodded in thanks to her servant and opened the letter, reading its contents.

It was an acceptance to Beacon Academy and her ticket to freedom. She left the piano and walked upstairs to her father's study. She knocked on the door and after a moment a rough, "Come in." was heard.

Weiss opened the door and went to her father's desk where he was seated. She handed him the letter. "Father, I have been accepted into Beacon Academy which starts in approximately one month."

Weiss's father read the letter and looked up at her. "Good. As to be expected. You are to have everything packed and ready in a week. I want no delays." He handed the letter back to Weiss. She took it and nodded, knowing this was a cue for her to leave.

The moment she left and the doors shut behind her she let out a sigh of relief. In one month she should have the first step away from her family and into the freedom she's desired her whole life.

Author Note:
I won't be doing many notes and such in my writing but I feel the need to explain a few things and place a few disclaimers.
First, I do not own RWBY, their characters, or make any claims to them. Next will be that I will try and update a chapter at the end of the week, every week. I may look into making it more frequent if it is enjoyed.
Finally, this is my first story to a larger scale and my first time writing fanfiction for anything. Constructive criticism, ideas, and advice are always welcome.

Thank you.
