Today is the first day of my senior year in high school. But I was not excited. I was terrified. My dad got a new job last month, which means we had to move to a completely new city, where I would go to a completely new school. No friends, no familiar teachers, no regular spot at the lunch room table next to the window. I have no idea what to expect.
At least it was a warm, sunny day. Maybe everyone will be in a good mood and not be too harsh on the "new girl." I got dressed in a simple white T-shirt and some denim shorts, trying my best to look as plain as possible to fit in. I didn't have the appetite to eat breakfast, so I just hopped on my bicycle and started quickly pedaling towards the place that will either be absolutely amazing... or a living hell.
As I turned a corner, I could see the school revealing itself up ahead. It was a huge building, and rather beautiful. Smooth white concrete, ornamental pillars running up the front of the building that was covered and giant glass windows. It looked more like a fancy courthouse than a school. Maybe I should've dressed up a little more if I wanted to fit in.
I nestled my bike into the bike rack and nervously started towards the front doors. Even the doors were something I would expect to see on a grand 5 star hotel.
Inside, the hallways were filled with people. Much to my surprise, I saw a variety of students. Some were dressed to obviously show off that they had money, some in ripped jeans and leather jackets, and others in casual sweatpants and T-shirts.
I squeezed through the crowds of busy students until I reached my locker. There was a girl loading textbooks into the locker next to mine. She looked up at me when I approached to unlock my locker. She had a curious expression on her face.
"Hi, I don't think I've seen you before. Are you new?" she asked with a smile.
I nodded shyly. "Yeah, it's my first day."
"Cool!" she was still smiling. "What year are you in?" She closed her locker and leaned her back against it.
"I'm a senior." I responded gently setting some notebooks into my otherwise empty locker.
"Me too! Maybe we'll have the same classes." She glanced into my empty locker. "Oh... come with me." She closed my locker door and locked her arm through mine, pulling me down the hallway. "We have to go to the principal to get your schedule and textbooks."
"I'm Y/N, by the way." I giggled at the fact that I'd already made a friend without even exchanging names.
"Well it's nice to meet you Y/N. I'm Nara."
The principal gave me the same schedule and classes as Nara so I could follow her to avoid getting lost or running into problems. I let out a sigh of relief, my nervousness easing away. After stuffing my books into my locker, we were off to our first class: Math.
All the other students were still socializing in the hallway before the bell rang, so Nara and I were the first two in the classroom, sitting in the middle. The others started shuffling in. A few other girls, waved and said hello to Nara, but nobody even acknowledged me. The class wasn't completely full, so there were still some open seats, including the one next to me. I had no problem with this. Having just one friend is way less drama.
Nara was talking to a guy sitting on the other side of her, and the rest of the room was buzzing with friendly conversations and laughter. I opened my math book and started skimming through the lesson to see what we would learn. Out of my peripheral vision, I noticed a guy slide into the seat next to me. He came from the back of the classroom, so I'm assuming he was already sitting and decided to move next to me. Nevertheless, I focused on my book.
"Hi," the boy said. The laughter of the girls in the back stopped abruptly, and the classroom went silent.
I looked up and nodded a silent 'hello' to him, not paying him much attention. I focused back on my book, but I was distracted by the quiet voices behind me, obviously a group of girls, whispering 'What is he doing?' 'Who is that?' 'She must be new.' 'Why is he talking to her?'
"Are you new?" he interrupted again. I nodded, keeping my eyes on my book. I felt Nara elbow me in the side to get my attention. She flicked her eyes over to the boy, probably to suggest that I talk to him. She looked strangely excited.
