I ran as fast as I could. Sticks and rocks pierced my body, my paws sounding like thunder on the ground, the forest around me a blur.
I didn't turn around to see what sounded like hundreds of feet and paws, that seemed to follow me no matter what I did. I didn't turn towards the place I called home. I didn't stop moving. I could smell the smoke from behind me.
I could still hear the screams ringing through my sensitive hearing. I could smell the blood still. Feel the loving arms of the one I love fade away. Even now my sight kept flicking, turning everything red. The blood of the ones I knew my whole life won't leave my mind.
Finally I can hear the pounding of feet and paws fade. The smell of smoke slowly clears. I turn my head to the left to see one wolf out of the small group of wolves that made it out alive. Back there it was a slaughter. A field of claws, snarls, growls, blood, and teeth. I mentally shook my head of any thoughts of what had occurred.
Fourteen, fourteen that was how many of us were left. Three of them were my bodyguards, one a close friends of my parents, two pairs of mated wolves, and 5 children not including myself. That was all that was left of our once ancient pack.
I knew I was weak. Most people in our pack would disagree, they think I am quite strong. This incident just proves how wrong they were. My brother who is younger than me was half as strong as I was and he was only four, 3 years younger than me. I was never as strong as mother and father though I had shifted early, it meant nothing if I could not protect the ones I love. I would grow strong, strong enough to protect my pack this time.
The fourteen of us ran in silence for hours. Hours turned into days. Day to weeks. Sometimes the adults in the pack would link us to turn a different direction to keep off other territories. We mourned the loss of our homes and families but never did we stop running. Not for water, food, or sleep we kept running. Our muscles protested and our stomachs clawed at out insides. Everyones throats were sore and dehydrated. Our mind pulled us closer to sleep making us sluggish. We needed to stop, we had come far enough now. We'd collapse sooner or later.
Two hours later we were nearing a large tree, its roots large and healthy. They tangled together to make a small almost cave looking thing. Though it looked small it was enough to fit us all inside for a rest. We'd manage.
I crouched low to get inside and moved to the far back sniffing for any signs of other wolves. None. I lowered my body to the ground fighting of the sleep, the unshifted pup on my back slowly gets off and lays against the trunk, soon he is back asleep. The others soon move in, the males helping the children and their mates. I made myself go back outside.
Me being the only shifted child who had any experience on the battlefield meant that I could sleep closer to the edge of the opening, ready to protect. Once the wolves I had traveled with were inside I slowly moved inside as well. The males going in last. I didn't shift back just curled up, my head on my paws.
Sleep than became so heavy I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. I heard a whimper and a sniffle to my right. I knew what everyone would dream of tonight. Th dead and empty eyes of our pack members. The stench of blood. The growls and snarls of brave warriors. The screams of women, children, and men that were teared apart. The cries of people loosing their family and friends. And the smile the rouges wore while they ruined everything. The gleam in their eyes. I growled quietly.
In the distance I thought I heard I howl. Maybe it was just the lack of sleep or the lack or water and food. My hearing picked it up again. It was a howl of victory. One of conquer. I knew they were mocking us. I jerked my head up and looked towards the opening. I vowed to rebuild my pack. To keep them safe and happy. My parents did. So will I.
My head became heavy and I could no longer fight of the sleep. The clawing of hunger and dehydration became to much so I shut my eyes. Letting the world fade away.

I woke to the unimaginable clawing of hunger. I knew it was time to eat. Time to hunt. Now that I had slept for awhile, I could now fight the sleep. The only thing I needed to satisfy now was my stomach and throat. Slowly moving around the sleeping forms I walked quietly outside. They all needed more sleep.
Moving slowly through the unknown forest, my nose, ears, and eyes always looking around. The forest was bright and green. The scents of nature meshing around me. Closing my eyes for a brief minute to take in the sound of the wind and birds, the scents around me, and the feel of cool dirt under my paws.
Suddenly my nose picked up the scent of damp grass, looking around me it was dry, meaning it hadn't rained. I followed the scent. Soon I could hear the small trickle of water running over rocks and could smell the animals that had been here hours before.
Arriving at the stream I could see the clear water running over a bed of stones and pebbles. My dry throat was begging me to drink, to fix the burning. I greedy drank. By the time I stopped drinking water my throat was happy and had stopped the painful burning.
I stared at the water, looking at my reflection. The water showed a large golden wolf with a white chest. The reflection showed two bright blue tired eyes. The tail was low to the ground, ears pinned to the side of its head. Fur was stained with blood. It was a sad sight but it was unmistakably me. Walking into the stream I cleaned my fur. The stream turned red but soon cleared again. Once I step out of the cool stream I shook my fur out. Water flying everywhere, when I stopped shaking out my fur it was left damp.
Putting my head down I began the hunt for food. I picked up numerous animals. Deer, rabbits, rats, mice , fox, and many birds. The deer was here recently maybe 2 hours ago. Following its scent for a long time before I saw it. A young elk in a harem (group of female deer). Currently I am crouched about 50 meters away, the wind in my favor. I could probably take down three including the stag that's if they don't struggle too much. That won't be enough to feed a starving group of wolves small or not.
' Hey Alli where are you? Are you okay?' The sudden mind link frightened me a little bit not enough to make me alert the elk.
' I'm out hunting, come here quickly and quietly so we can feed the pack please. I am northwest of the stream. Bring one other person who is up for hunting please.' I reply quickly my eyes never leaving my prey.
They arrive as I said quietly and quickly. Ones far enough behind the group of elk to block any escape routes. They were surrounded and they had no clue. The innocent elk, but we were starving and we were going to go mad if we didn't eat. They looked towards my spot. Waiting.
Now. I sprint full speed towards the nearest elk trusting that the others will catch the others. Before it knew what was happening I had my jaws around its slim neck. CRACK. The elk went limp. I didn't have time to celebrate. The elk had began to scatter now they didn't get far though.
I took down 2 elk and helped take down another down. It total we took down 7 elk of decent size. We called the remaining pack members and devoured the dead animals. Once again covered in blood.
Now that we were all fed, hydrated, and not as sluggish we can now begin our plan of revenge. Our plan to get back at the people who drove us away. And my journey to get stronger. I will not see another slaughter unless I am the one whose done it.
