That that you know what makes up things, its time to come up with some rules. Quantum mechanics are the rules which govern every particle. Here are some of them:

Heisenberg's uncertainty principle- This principle states that when you know one thing about a particle, you lose information about another characteristic.

Quantum tunneling- Quantum tunneling is when if a particle (etc a proton) is trapped in a barrier (the coulomb's barrier in this case),  when given high enough energies will turn from particle to wave, and thus escape the barrier. This is responsible  making nuclear reactors not explode.
