"James," Father Alric reached out to me, but I swatted him away.
"You," I glared up at him, and he took a step back, frightened. "You tried to take me away from Julia!"
"I thought it was for the best, James!" he tried to explain, but I was having none of it.
"You're thinking just like everyone else, Father. She's not weak!" I shouted at him. I grabbed Julia's hand and went back into the orphanage. After that day, Father Alric never put us in separate adoptions. It took me years to forgive him for trying to separate us. However, once the husband told everyone what had happened to his hand, there was hardly anyone that wanted us. They believed I was too monstrous. I didn't care much for what they said about me. All I cared about was being with Julia. She was my only family, and I wasn't about to lose that.
I woke up and noticed I was still on the floor from earlier. I looked down to see Julia sound asleep.
It was just a bad dream, thank the Five.
"Julia, get up. It's morning." I shook her, and she opened her eyes and yawned.
"We slept on the floor?" she looked around as if she didn't remember.
"We were both exhausted from trying to help you control that ancient ward you had," I explained as I helped her up.
"Oh, right, I remember now," she looked at her left hand and clenched it. She still was thinking about what happened with the boy, but I believe he had it coming; my sister is strong and shouldn't be messed with.
"Come on, let's go change. We have class today." I tapped her shoulder, and we got into a new pair of clothes and went our separate ways to class. I wasn't feeling hungry, so I didn't stop by the mess hall to eat, but as I was walking towards my class, I saw him, Evgeni. Evgeni was with two other students, another boy, and a girl. They were talking to each other until he spotted me. At first, I was ready for whatever he was gonna do, but as soon as he saw me, he turned back to the others and continued talking. I just walked away and was relieved that I didn't have to defend myself from him, but then I felt an immense pressure in my head that made me stop.
I didn't forget what you did two days ago; Head Mistress might've wiped everyone's memory that day, but I put a protective barrier on me against a simple mind erase spell. No one has ever survived from my ice imprisonment spell before; I'll be sure to keep a close eye on you from now on. This isn't over, punk.
Evgeni was speaking to me through my mind, and what he told was bone-chilling. He remembered everything that happened on that day. I was hoping I could go on knowing he wouldn't remember me, but it looks like that wasn't the case. The pressure left just as quickly as it appeared, and I was able to move again. I didn't turn back around because I knew he was staring me down with his cold, sinister eyes. I went as fast as I could, almost sprinting, to get out of the same hallway he was in. Before I knew it, I was in my classroom. There were a couple of kids doing their own things, and that included Jackal tinkering with some kind of device. To get the thought of Evgeni out of my head, I needed to distract myself. So, I went over to see what Jackal was tinkering with.
"Hey Jackal, what are you doing?" I asked him.
"Oh, hey, James. I'm fixing a toy that my little brother sent to me." Jackal sounded more serious than yesterday. I guess it was because he was concentrating on fixing his brother's toy.
"What is it, exactly?"
"It's a magnetized ball. There's a controller that goes with it that makes it move, and it can roll onto any metal surface. I'm kinda surprised that it broke did though, these things usually last forever. But whatever's wrong with it, I can't seem to figure out."
"May I take a look at it?" I reach out my hand.
"Yeah, knock yourself out." He handed the ball and leaned back in his seat.
Looking at it first glance, the surface was pretty smooth for the amount of use this little toy has had in the past. I could feel the wear it's gone through, the countless amounts of resurfacing and polishing this had gone through just by touching it. The weight of it was pretty light, which I knew why. I looked through the small opening that Jackal was looking through and it was all mechanized. The only power source was a small crystal in the center, which is connected to the controller that controls the ball's movements. It didn't take me long to find the problem. "Oh, there's a gear that fell out of place way in the back. Can you hand me your tweezers?" Jackal handed me his tweezers, and ever so gently, I picked up the fallen gear and put it back in its place. "There, that ought to do it."
"I've been at this for a week now, and I can't believe I didn't see that! How did you do that?" Jackal jumped out of his seat and returned back to his excited self from yesterday.
"Being one of the oldest in an orphanage, you kinda turn into an older sibling to the little kids there. I've acquired a lot of skills from it, and I had to repair a lot of toys for them." I handed him the toy and tweezers back, but then I felt someone put their hand on my back. I turned around to see Uriela looking up at me with a smile.
