Change My Ways

Chapter One

It was the first day of school back from the winter break. Brett, a freshman at Rogen High School, was having mixed feelings about comeing back.
He honestly didn't care about the whole "school" idea, not like he had a life to go back to at home. No best friends, no close family, not a single pet, although he dreams of one day getting a dog of his own to be with.
"Something that won't leave, huh? Something that will love me unconditionally... sounds good to me!"
That's what he always thought of course. Even though he dreaded being lonely all the time, he still hated having to talk to people. It's not the people that he hates, but the fact that someone else is interacting with him, the fear of him doing something wrong, the fear that someone else is actually in front of him... so he came to the conclusion that he would always be this way and to ease him of the feeling, he distanced himself from everyone.
The more he thinks about it, the more he thinks he might distance himself from his 'future' dog aswell.

Walking into his first period, he quickly sat down and began to 'scan' the room. He began to remember all the names and faces from last semester.
About five minutes later, the bell rang. Brettson didn't even notice. He was too busy thinking about how boring his Christmas was compaired to the other kids. He could hear the conversation of his desk neighbor. He listened to the speaker's humourous tale of him and his uncles fist fight over the last piece of Christmas cake, and even louder, he could hear his audiance laughing.
The first class of the day was about to start. The room began to fill with sounds of shooshing once Ms. Chang, the class's first period teacher walked in.
"Goodmorning class, good to see all you kids back. To start us off today, I would like to introduce a new student to this class." Says Ms. Chang in that mellow-tone voice of hers.
She then directs the class's attention to the door as a boy comes walking in the room right on cue.
"His name is Nick and he is a transfer from Birksland High. Please make him feel nice and welcome to our school."
