"Oh my,"
a woman said, her voice barley above a whisper as worry and disillusion
dripped from her pale lips. She glanced at the child in front of her, whose eyes remained set on her, "this is the second week my love, the king has not returned. The cattle are dying and so are their young." She said turning her gaze to the other child that slept by her. Tears threatened to break the barriers that pride embedded in her. But no go, she blinked them away and turned to look at the child in front of her once again.

The woman's hand slightly and gently grazed the child's soft and tender cheek. The child's eyes looked into the woman's eyes desperately trying to understand exactly what she meant. "Perhaps the king will come back." said the child, her eyes scanning the woman's face once more and she put her hand on the woman's knee, "Mother, don't lose hope." She stated in a firm but still gentle voice as she gave a reassuring squeeze to her mother's knee before removing her hand entirely as she stood up. "I'll put Lawrence to bed." She stated giving her mother one last glance and walking over to her sleeping brother who laid on the floor, a blanket being the only thing that separated his warm little body from the cold floor.

"Thank you, flower." her mother whispered as she stared out the window trying to clear her thoughts.

The girl tucked a hand under the boy's neck and slowly slid her arm further so his head rested on her inner elbow, she then slipped her hand below his knees and again made sure his legs rested on her forearm, she got ready to stand up by keeping her right knee placed on the floor while she lifted the left leg at a less than 90 degree angle as she began to shift her weight to the left leg she slowly began to extend her left leg as her right leg slid forward to extend as well.

Making sure her grip was tight but not uncomfortable, she began to make her way to one of the two room in the house. She was careful not to trip on her brother's s wooden toys, which laid beside the door she was about to enter. As she entered she glance at one of the three beds. The one furthest to the left. She quickly averted her gaze and began to make her way to her brothers bed, she carefully laid him down and made sure he was comfortable as she adjusted his head on the pillow below it, and covered the rest of his body with the quilt she had made for him 2 years ago on his 5th birthday. Gently smiling at the memory, she sat beside him and stared at his face, remembering.

"Ahh haa!" Yelled her brother "I found you, Florence!" said the boy with shining eyes as he lifted the cover that was hiding Florence. "You might have found me," she said with a smile, a mischievous glimmer in her eyes, "but have you found Louise?"  She asked as fear flashed in the boys eyes, he turned around and a girl came running and crashing them both down. He screeched and both girls laughed loudly.
"I win!" Yelled the girl as she stood up leaving her brother on the floor and began dancing around the room.
"I was supposed to win! It's MY birthday!" He whined turning his glare to his older sister who sat on the floor and simply laughed at him. "It's alright Laurie," she called him by his nickname as she pulled out a box from behind her. "I have something for you, child." she said a gentle smile graced upon her lips as she handed him the box
Laurie's eyes, filled with curiosity as he sat on the floor by Florence, he eyed the box, then glanced up at Florence.
"What is it?" He asked, "Open it, and find out." said Louise as she took a seat next to him, her eyes glimmered and  gentle smile formed on her face as she hugged her brother, "Happy birthday, Laurie." She said as Laurie put the box down and hugged Louise back, "I want to join in!" Florence said scooting closer to the two as she wrapped her arms around both of them engulfing them in a tight hug.
"Alright! Alright!" Laughed Louise as she pulled away from the hug "open it." She said looking in  Lawrence's direction, giving him an encouraging look. Florence nodded as she picked the box up off the floor and handed back to Lawrence, "Do it." She said still smiling. Laurie's face was filled with curiously as he tore the box open, and a huge smile broke onto his face, eyes glimmering wildly.
"It's beautiful." Were the only words he managed to say as he continued to gaze at the quilt, tears beginning to form in his eyes. "You better not cry, because if you begin to cry so will I." Said Louise as tear blurred her vision, and a smile formed on her lips.

A small smile found its way onto Florence's face, as she recalled the fond memory.

"Oh Louise."

Florence stood up from Lawrence's bed, taking one last glance at him before making her way out of the room. As she walked away from the bed, she moved her tearful eyes to the farthest bed to the left.

The blankets were violet and had little flowers embedded at the edges, the bed was undone and the pillow was a bit sunken inward, indicating that someone was on there.

At some point in time.
