The Unexpected Voice

Start from the beginning

"Not bad, greenie. I'm impressed. You might just have the chops to be a runner."

"I have a name you know." River sighed.

"Well considering the fact that you haven't told us, I'm calling you greenie." Newt raised an eyebrow.

"It's River." She rolled her eyes.

"Well, River, lovely name by the way. I'm sorry to have to do this, but you're going to have to be put in the slammer for an hour or so until the gathering. I promise that we're not going to hurt you." He looked sincere enough.

River looked over at Minho, waiting for his input. He slightly nodded at her, and she groaned.

"Lead the way." She jokingly held out her wrists in mock surrender.

She'd been in the slammer for what felt like hours. The minutes seemed to be dragging on, and she couldn't wait to get out and get some answers.

River ran her hand across the stone floor, and traced her eyes across the grooves. She pulled her knees up to her chest and rested her chin on top of them. Without River noticing, someone appeared at the bars that lead to the rest of the Glade.

"Hey, you're River right?" He spoke, as River jumped in fright. He had curly brown hair that lay on his head like a mop, and a friendly looking face. She nodded at him. "I'm Chuck."

"Well hello, Chuck!" She smiled. She figured she might as well make a few friends for the duration of her stay. They fell into an awkward silence, neither one of them really having anything to say. River finally spoke up. "Can you explain to me what's going on?"

"Well I'm really not supposed to..." his eyes darted around, making sure that no one was there, "but I guess if you don't tell anyone that I told you. Alby's supposed to tell you during the tour."

"I promise I won't tell." River moved up towards the bars that separated the two of them, holding onto the bars as she pressed her face closer to him.

"This place, it's called the Glade."

"Yeah, I already kno-" he shushed her.

"It's called the Glade." he continued. "No one really knows why we're here. See those walls?" he pointed behind him while still staring intently at River. She nodded. "Every night they close, and every morning they open again. They protect us from what's out there."

"What is out there?" River was starting to get impatient.

"The maze." Newt walked up behind Chuck and sat down next to him. At first, Chuck looked startled. It was as if he knew he was going to get in trouble the minute Newt saw him. Probably because he was worried that Newt would tell Alby that he was spilling all of his secrets. Newt, however, didn't seem to care. He didn't seem shocked at all that the young boy was already sharing everything.

"Every morning when those doors open, the runners try and find a way out."

"Well how long have you been looking?" She asked, afraid for the answer.

        "Three years." Newt stated.

"Three years!? Three years and you haven't found anything!?" River raised her voice.

"It's a lot harder than it looks." Newt said.

        "Care to elaborate?" She asked.

"I think that's enough for now. I'll let Alby explain the rest later." Newt stood up, and started to unlock the door. "But for right now, we've got a gathering to attend."

River sat in a stool in front of all of the boys in the Glade, and was feeling extremely uncomfortable. Everyone was staring at her with different expressions. Some looked happy, others confused. A few were angry, while others looked lustful. The rest just seemed indifferent.

The leaders of each of the job in the maze, who River learned were called "Keepers", all sat on a stool behind her. That included Newt, Alby, and Minho.

"Alright listen up!" Alby spoke up. Any chatting that was going on was diminished by his voice. "As you can see, we have a new arrival. We're here to figure out what we're going to do with her."

"I say we banish her." One of the keepers spoke up.

"Not now, Gally." Alby shushed him.

"She could be working for the creators of this place! She could have just been sent up here to toy with our emotions and to cause destruction!" Gally stood up, pointing at her. The crowd began to talk again, louder than before. It seemed that everyone had an opinion, and they all wanted to share it. River, on the other hand, wondered what being banished was. She hoped that she'd never have to find out.

Suddenly, one voice rang out louder than the others. It took a moment for her to realize that this voice didn't belong to someone in the room, but to someone in her head. The words sent shivers down her spine.

"You were supposed to be dead." The voice spoke, and with that, River collapsed.

A/N: Hey again! So I'm really excited about where this story is going and I hope that you are too. I do have to warn you that this won't be one of those stories where they get together in the first three chapters, but it won't be one of those stories where it takes forever either.

Basically it will just come at whatever time I feel is appropriate for the story.

Let me know if you're enjoying it! Some motivation would be nice!

Thanks for reading!!!
