Chapter 24- A Happy Birthday Gift

Start from the beginning

"Okay. Have fun, sweetie." He said opening the front door.

''Yeah..." She trailed shutting the door. Her father and her didn't talk much. If they did there was a purpose behind it. But still she felt more connected to her father than mother. It was indeed true she had inherited some of his qualities.

She lazily laid on the couch browsing through the TV channels. She settled on Discovery. And only after a few moments her eyes started to feel heavy and she dozed off.

Something buzzing under her woke her up she reached for it and the caller ID stared at her face. It was Becky. She had been asleep for more than an hour. Ally was prepared to hear Becky's curses.

The phone stopped vibrating and she noticed it had five missed calls all from her friend. She quickly redialed and told her she would be there in a few minutes.

All through the car ride she was thinking about a perfect excuse to tell Becky. She had decided to say that her father had asked her to come to this far away place to deliver the file. That sounded perfect and she was prepared to face her red faced friend.

When she was a few meters from the gym door she encountered a situation she wasn't prepared for. She watched as the door burst open and few people emerged carrying a stretcher. She couldn't see the patient from the distance but knew someone was badly injured.

It wasn't until she saw Becky come behind the hospital men she realized who could've been hurt. She stalked towards her friend to confirm her speculations.

''What happened?" She asked. Her voice was filled with panic and worry.

''Cameron..." Becky trailed off glancing at the stretcher behind them. She immediately turned towards him. His eyes were closed and his body was covered with sweat. A large bandage covered his nose but it couldn't hide the traces of blood from a possible broken nose.

''Miller..." She said moving forward to touch his hand. She didn't expect him to reply but he did by slowly opening his eyes. He looked up at her slowly and said in a rough voice,''Hey...''

He sounded so weak; the weakest she had ever heard him. She felt pity for him and it was clear in her eyes. He reached for her hand from where he lay and held it softly.

She squeezed his hand in return reassuringly and rubbed it between her own hands. They looked at each other and she told him he's going to be alright through a mere look. Becky was beside her all the time and it was unknown to her why she felt the need to comfort him.

Very soon he was carried away to the ambulance waiting outside the school. ''Do you think we should go to the hospital?" Ally asked although she was feeling positive about the whole thing.

''Of course. Luke, Ryan and Haley are still at the game. They'll come after it's over."

Ally and Becky hopped into her car and followed the ambulance. She asked about how it happened and why Becky hadn't told her on the phone.

''It was right after you hung up. Someone elbowed him really hard on the nose when he was trying to take the ball... And he fell to the ground. I heard he had an injured back before and it had worsened after he fell."

''I told him to give it a break. But he just won't stop practising and now look.." She trailed off her hands tightly clutching the steering wheel.

''And we were losing to them. There was still one quarter left... And now who knows what the fuck is happening there?" Becky said voicing her concern. Now probably they had ti wait for the game to be over to know the result.

''What's the score?"

''76-88. " Becky said. It wasn't that bad Vikings could still win it.
The rest of the route they discussed the chances of wining and the future of the team in the tournament. When they reached the hospital Ally parked her outside and Becky was waiting for her at the reception. They were walking together when Becky asked a daunting question, "You and him seemed pretty intense back there?" She knew what her friend was referring to but she herself didn't know what had happened to her at school.
