I sat down in the back of the room where no one would notice me. Placing my ear buds on I blocked out the reality and lost myself in the music. Nobody spoke to me, it was almost as though I was invisible but it was nice. When no one bothers me I can watch others, make up my own reality, one where no one questions me. I watch as people walk in clumps of animated movement occasionally glancing at me but then scurrying away. A tap on my shoulder jolted me out of my daydreams and I looked at a boy slightly shorter than me, probably a sophomore.

"Hey do you know where the choir room is? I'm new and this map is confusing," he looked at me hopefully.

Getting over my initial shock that someone spoke to me I gave him a small smile, "I'm going there now."

He bounced along beside me, looking around with big doe eyes. Slight envy shot through me. How can someone be so happy at school? How can someone be so happy about anything? He followed me around the room his eyes big and full of awe.

Maybe I can learn something from this kid.
I say on the far edge of the risers and the boy followed me. He sat down calmly, his past excitement seeming to have vanished. He closed his eyes and began to sway to the soft piano playing rapidly scribbling down notes at pauses, it was almost as though he didn't want to miss a single note. As though each note was a word and without that single word the whole story would be lost.

Once the song ended he grinned and started bouncing where he was sat. He was the first one to answer every one of the teachers questions where as I answered them in my head. After class he skipped out of the room with his books clutched to his chest in the way nerds do in movies. Odd new kid.
