Brooke

Empty and Alone. Two feelings I felt thinking about Layla. I couldn't save her, I couldn't help her. I was useless and it cost her life. She was alone as she died, I wasn't able to get to her in time.

A steady beeping echoed through the room, a beep that I wanted to shut up. The distinct smell of disinfectant filled the air, an odor associated with a hospital. A place dedicated to sanitary and clean conditions.

Pain started to become noticeable, snapping my eyes open, I almost sat up in alarm when a hand carefully held me in place. Carefully turning my head, my eyes locked onto the same hazel ones from yesterday.

His deep, rugged voice placed a feeling of safety inside me as he looked at me with concern. "It's ok, you are safe now. Doctors don't want you to move to much"

Nodding slowly, my voice came out hoarse. "What happened". A cup of water was placed in my hand, to help relieve the scratchy feeling in my throat. A small smile of appreciation sent towards the mystery man.

"You got hurt pretty bad. They had to do surgery to get the bullet out." Taking time to process and remember everything that happened last night, I looked at him once again.

"Thank you". At first he looked confused. Until I clarified. "For saving me". A small smile graced his features.

Holding his hand out he introduced himself. "I'm Sergeant Hank Voight". Carefully shaking his hand, still feeling a little weak

"Brooklyn Sutton. Most people call me Brooke". Stepping away from me, he placed his hands in his pockets, a look of sympathy flashed in his eyes.

"I need to ask you a couple questions Brooke. Is that ok?" Accepting it with a nod, I gave a weak smile. I mean why wouldn't I help him. He saved my life, something I don't know how to repay.

I felt at ease with the older man. He held this confident stance that would intimidate anyone. He asked his questions, most of which were what happened. I told him as much as I could. Although my eyes were hazy and I couldn't exactly see what was happening after getting my head slammed into a rail, I gave him all I could.

Wiping away the tear that fell from my eye, realizing that Layla was really gone. I looked at Hank. "I wish I could be more helpful". Moving to where he was next to me, he placed a hand on my shoulder, squeezing it in a reassuring way.

"You helped in more ways then you know Brooke. Get some rest". With that the hazel-eyed man left my room. Taking the safety and protective presence with him.

My nap was cut short due to an excruciating pain flaring where my bullet wound was. Crying out in pain, the machine next to me started to go haywire. Sirens and alarms blaring around the room.

Doctors and nurses flooded the room, trying to figure out what was going on. Only as one touched my side, I yelped in pain.

Grabbing my hand, I could only look at the red-haired doctor through spotty vision. "Brooke you have to go back into surgery"

"Just make it stop". Feeling something being pushed through the IV, the instant feeling of sleepiness took over me. Being wheeled through the ER and up to the surgery rooms, Will Halstead stood worried.

As I laid on the surgery table unconscious, I had no clue the red-haired doctor called Hank to tell him I went back into surgery. Also unknown to me, Hank sat in his office, a look of fury in his eyes.
