Steve's heart stopped.

"W-What are you talking about?"

"I'm going blind, Steven. I can see blurs of people and sometimes their faces but other than that, my sight is getting worst. Banner predicted that within the next few months, my sight will be completely gone."

"Brooke. Oh Brooke. How. . .?" Steve trailed off, not knowing how to word that.

"The tesseract. Banner says my eyes have been getting more and more stress from the tesseract. You know the way it put so much of its power on my heart? Well it's traveled to my eyes. Banner says its only a matter of time before something neurological happens."

"Brooke." Steve kissed her knuckles. "You've got to come back to me. Please. I want to be able to take care of you."

"I don't need anyone to take care of me, Steven. I can still see, you're just a blonde blur right at the moment." Brooke chuckled, trying to lighten things up. "I want to see James and Samuel, Steven. Are they here?"

Steve didn't answer right away, he was still trying to process it all.

"Er, yeah. Yeah." Steve rubbed his eyes before standing up. "Here. I'll help you." Steve took Brooklyn's hand.

"Steven. I've been mostly blind for quite a while, love. I can find my way-"

"You won't have to do anything by yourself while I'm with you, baby." Steve pressed a firm kiss to Brooklyn's forehead, then put an arm around her waist to help guide her.

"Here. Stay with the girls while I go find Sam and Buck." Steve pulled Brooklyn's chair out for her when they made it back to the table filled with girls. Natasha had left to dance with Clint, Skye left to dance with Agent Ward, leaving Maria, May, Bobbi, Jane, and now Darcy at the table. "I'll be right back, Brooke. Don't go anywhere. Please. I don't want you to get lost or hurt yourself."

"Steven-"

"I love you." Steve had left before Brooke could say anything.

"What did he mean, Brooke?" Maria asked.

"Um, I suppose I shouldn't keep it a secret. But my sight isn't the best right now." Brooke brushed her hair back, sighed as her rather clumsy soldier pushed through the crowd in a rush to get back to Brooke. She could just barely see the blur of his body, but it made her smile.

"He's so happy that he's seen you." May said.

"He seems like a dopey bear when he's excited." Darcy added. "He's tripping over every little thing just to get back to you sooner."

"Its true love, I suppose." Brooklyn couldn't help but smile.

"Ugh! I want that." Bobbi groaned, putting her head back.

"Brooke? What do you mean your sight isn't the greatest?" Jane asked.

"The tesseract had been putting too much stress on my heart but now all the stress is directed to my eyes. My vision is still there I just. . . Most of you are blurs, but I'm perfectly fine."

"Brooke, that's not-" May was cut off when Bucky, Sam, and Steve ran up to the table.

"Brooke!" Bucky exclaimed, picking Brooklyn up from her chair and spinning her around. "I missed you, buddy."

"You're drunk, James." Brooke couldn't help but giggle. Bucky was in a suit originally but he had lost his jacket as some point through the night. His shoulder length hair was pulled back into a ponytail, but some hair was falling out around his face.

"Its good to see ya, Brooke." Sam was the next to hug Brooklyn. He wore his full suit and a pair of sunglasses.

"Its wonderful to see you boys after such a long time." Brooklyn felt her eyes tear up, making things even harder to see.

"Whoa, Brooklyn Romero's shedding a tear." Sam chuckled. Steve elbowed Sam's ribcage, shaking his head. "Sorry, Brooke."

"Its alright, Samuel." Brooke shook her head, wiping her cheeks quickly.

"So everything's going back to normal, right?" Bucky asked, his words slurred just a bit. "Like, you and Cap'll be together and we won't have to babysit him while he cries for days?"

"I don't cry for days." Steve mumbled.

"I'm not exactly sure, James. I have to talk to Director Fury but I'll see what I can do." Brooke nodded.

"Why aren't you looking at us, Brooke?"

"You just had to ask that didn't you, Sam?" Steve sighed.

"It'll be just fine, Steven. I'll tell Samuel and James when they're both sober so they know." Brooke rubbed Steve's arm with her soft hand.

"Come on. Let's go to my place." Steve turned Brooke to him.

"Steven, I've got to talk to Director Fury before he finds out through any of these agents. I don't want to be the reason you get into trouble or anything."

"I'm just about a hundred years old, Brooke. I don't think I give a shit what he thinks." Steve led the way to the elevator.

"What about James and Samuel? How will they get home?"

"The hell if I know." Steve chuckled, placing a kiss on Brooke's lips.

I love Steve's rebel way. Its so funny and amusing to me.... sorry for the short chapter but a lot of you were wanting to know what made Brooke blind. The next chapter will be so much better.
