I Wish...

"Hi, I'm Reina Emilia Mendez. I hope we could get along together. " As the little girl greets her new classmates.

She has a long brown hair with set of black eyes, thin lips, pointed nose and has a fair complexion with a hint of pink.

Being a transferee, Reina is always alone at school.

One day, on her way home someone with her same age suddenly introduced himself, "Hello, I'm Dylan Reyes" while reaching Reina's hand for a handshake.

"Isn't it too formal to introduce yourself? Besides I don't talk to strangers," said Reina looking down.

"Oh we are in the same school and we're batch mates and I think that you are our new neighbor. I always saw you walking alone so I approached you. I hope you don't mind. "

Reina examined the boy's face, black perfect cut hair, deep set brown eyes, perfect nose, smiling lips and his face were covered with light brown spots.

"Is your eyes color natural?" while staring at Dylan's eyes.

"Ah, yes of course!" replied Dylan

"It's weird. But it looks good on you " As they start walking home.

Not knowing that those simple gestures will be the start of their friendship. As friendship grows they became a refuge for each other.

However, there are a limit as to how much happiness one is allowed to experience in this life. As they leave each other Dylan and his family moved to the city to manage their family business. Meanwhile, Reina's mother soon grew too old and sickly to work as the years passed by. In which they don't have known living relative.

She stayed home to tend her mother, for they were far too poor to afford medicine and hospitals are located at other island. Reina tried everything, from homemade remedies to begging tourists passing by to help her mother. She thinks there's no hope, because her mother doesn't have any chance to teach her to grow crops like her mother once did. She has no genius in medicine nor was she any good in studying.

"If only I had some kind of talent, then maybe, just maybe, I might make enough money to take Mama to a doctor". Reina spent every day blaming herself for not being good enough.

Having a home near shore is an advantage for she gets relaxed by the breeze of salty air. That night as she laid at the sands staring at the night sky. She saw a shooting star.

"Wow! Is that a shooting star?!" A glimpse of delight is visible on her face. Seeing a shooting star for the first time.

"I wish I could have make a wish before its gone." Realizing that seeing a shooting star is rare.

"But i'll still make a wish."

"Little star make my wish come true, I wish, I wish... to discover what I'm good at. So I can make use of it and earn some money for my mother's treatment" As she clasp her hands while closing her eyes. Tears escaped from her tired eyes feeling hopeless.

Twelve years had passed. Just as she is about to give up hope, one truly cold December night, a handsome young man came by, he was recollecting memories of his childhood years and didn't notice the time so he got a hard time remembering the way to their camp. Night was falling and as he walked through, only the moonlight is his guide to see in the dark. As he kept walking, he spotted a little house behind the large trees. Warm orange light faintly light up the little quiet house. He approached the house as he felt that it was a heart-warming place to spend one night.

Reina saw the man from outside and quickly invited him asking "Aren't you cold? Come on in".

The man looked up and whispered a faint "Thank you". She gave him a cup of warm water and as they sat, only the noise of insects and flash of waves can be heard.

"I can see that your not from here" Reina feels the awkwardness she then initiated the conversation.

"I used to live here a very long time ago. And now I'm travelling with our organization to carry out small local programs to address a wide range of health issues among a far flung islands and give simple donations."

Feeling hopefull, Reina asked "By any chance, are you a doctor?"

"Oh I'm still studying to become a doctor and I join outreach program to enhance and gain new experiences."

"Will you please take a look of my mother? She's been sick a couple of years and she's growing weaker and weaker. I'll understand if you can't determine her disease. I'm just hoping if you could..." As Reina guided the young man into her mother's room.

As the man promised he'd try to heal her mother. It was thanks for letting him stay the night. They were huddled by a small lamp, the only light in the house.

Good thing that the young man didn't left his belongings before wandering. The young man pulled out some of his tools and supplies and began to work, these things that Reina had never seen before. Once he had finished, he lifted his head up and smiled at her, he assured Reina that her mother was going to be alright.

Finally, this weight was lifted off her shoulders. She sincerely thanked the young man and led him to her small room which she had prepared for him while he was treating Reina's mother.

"Thank you very much. This means so much to me." Flash of sincere smile and teary eyed Reina.

"I should thank you also for letting me spend a night into your home even you don't know me." A hint of sadness is evident on young man's voice can be heard as he say those words.

That night before going to sleep, Reina went to the shore to thank heaven above for finally she had given a chance to have hope again.

And that night for the second time, she saw a shooting star. "_"
