We all know the expression "don't judge a book by its cover!" But let's be honest here, we do the exact OPPOSITE. Covers are one of the main factors that draw people to books, and if you don't have a nice looking cover, that tells me that you didn't put effort into your book. Now that's not always true; some people write really amazing stories with a lot of effort put into it yet they didn't really try on the cover, and as I stated before, we'd likely judge how the book is written just by looking at the cover.
I know thinking of a great cover is difficult, I struggle coming up with good covers for fanfics myself. But I've personally learned that going with a really simple cover draws a lot more attention than a cover with bright colors, lots of decorations and photos, all that extra stuff. Here are some tips on how to easily make a great cover, as well as some things you DON'T want to do.
TIPS
1. Look up wallpapers that relate to your story. For example, if your story takes place in California, you can look up photos of a beach or some palm trees and edit the photo by adding a filter (if you'd like) then applying the title of your fanfic. If your story is sad, find some black and white photos or a picture of someone wandering a city alone! Your story takes place around Christmas? Find a photo of a Christmas tree or a snowy landscape! Pinterest and WeHeartIt are great apps to get a nice wallpaper!
