The Practice of Warrior Naming

A warrior's first name is of little significance - it adheres to whatever a kit looks like at birth, perhaps the vegetation growing around the nursery. A mother may even name her kit after something it is not. Take Tigerkit, for example; when he was born, it seemed that he was too weak to survive, and so Leopardfoot declared him a tiger in the hope that he may live.

A warrior's surname, however, reflect's a feline's personality and abilities. It is only after moons of careful observation, and a mentor's progress reports, that a leader formerly decides upon a proper name. A medicine cats, meanwhile, have even more time to ponder since their apprentices are with them from dawn until dusk, and because being the healer of the Clan is an important role; a cat with a silly name will not be taken seriously. While there are several exceptions to the ritual of personality-based naming, such as Brokentail and Crookedjaw, cats who are named after their flaws are perpetually resentful, and thus reasonable leaders avoid it.

While looking through the series, I was delighted to find that my theory was correct, for cats who share the same surname are indeed similar. I was constructed below a list of popular Clan surnames, accompanied with their meanings. Feel free to comment if you may notice any additional meanings!
