Hi. How's it going? What's your name? Oh, nice. I'm Teo. Teo Duran. I'm 14 and in no way looking forward to going to my new school.

My family had just moved here to Georgia from their comfortable life back in Illinois. I'm not sad about moving, no. I have no memories of Illinois since, well, I've never been. You see, I'm adopted and I've lived here in Georgia my whole life. The only difference now is I'm newly adopted and instead of the public school I went to when I was in and out of foster care, I'm going to a different public school. But it gets worse.

I'm sad that my new life is starting with my adopted mom forcing me to play an instrument. I love music, sure but I don't want to make music. She didn't even let me choose whether I'd join the school band program or the string orchestra program. No, she chose for me and she chose orchestra. Ew.

Why do I say ew? How can I not say ew!? Orchestra is so boring and I doubt I'll be any good. My mom isn't someone to say no to though.

You know those stereotypical Asian tiger moms? Well my adopted mom happens to be one of those moms. Her son, Andy, is 12 and can already play piano as well as Lang Lang. I cannot compete with that. I can play piano already, as well, but I play horribly and only play pop songs and stuff like that on it. Classical music just isn't my thing.

At least she let me pick which instrument I could play. Well, she wanted me to play either cello or violin so instead, I decided to play viola. I don't know, viola just sounds cooler than a violin, you know? Viola seems like the elegant violin's misfit brother and that's how I feel.

It's time for me to start getting ready for the day. Oh. Did I not mention that I'm going to start today? Well, now you know.
