( A COUPLE
HOURS BEFORE )

"Why did we break up?" a frantic and desperate voice all but shouted on the other side of the phone.

Seungmin flinched at the volume, pulling the phone away from his ear to check if he had accidentally hit the speaker phone by doing so, it gave him a good view of his screen, where an unknown number shone back at him menacingly.

He frowned, the headache that had finally settled down due to sleep was slowly returning as annoying as ever, like Jisung. Only internal and far less deadly.

He had only fallen asleep a couple hours ago, after taking all the legal dosages of pain killers and antibiotics his body could take. Having taken the most stressful shift at the hospital a few days before, Seungmin cursed his immune system for contracting some sort of flu from one of the younger patients.

So the second year nurse, struggling from a brain splitting headache and boiling hot fever, allowed himself the pleasure of getting some well deserved rest. Which consisted of a weekend of nothing but sleep, instant ramen, Woojin's famous chicken soup, movies and more sleep (and ignoring Jisung's insistent need to annoy the shit out of him).

Well, that was until his phone rang from the bedside table, immediately pulling him out of the cool and comfortable slumber and back into his stuffy bedroom, forehead and back damp with the sweat from the fever breaking in the night.

So you can't blame him that, when he finally picked up the phone and heard the strangers...strange greeting, he paused.

Seungmin then groaned lowly, voice laced with sleep and a sore throat.

Thus, with as much politeness and brain capasity the sick man was able to muster at the most ungodly hour of 2am, he eloquently replied,

"What the fuck?"

"Why did we break up?!" the voice painfully shouted again, and only then did Seungmins conscience finally awake with his body, and he realised the person on the other side of the phone was crying- boderline wailing.

He blinked once, the twice, before he collected his thoughts.

In retrospect, perhaps Seungmin should've been more sincere with his questioning- or simply hung up, as this was obviously a prank or a wrong number- but it was 2am, and no one is in there right mind at 2am.

"Who is this?" He chose to ask instead of flinging his phone into the wall.

The stranger whimpered, and Seungmin felt a pang of pity smack him in the chest (or it was a growing chest infection, but hey, semantics).

"Seungmin-ah..." they whined, hiccuping.

The change in atmospehere was so apparent, the person on the other side of the phone might as well have been right in front of him. Because almost immediately, Seungmin recognised the voice, and while it had been a little less than 10 years since his name had been said like that by this paticular person, Seungmin could practically see their red rimmed eyes and flushed damp cheeks, school shirt untucked and tie loosely hanging around their neck.

His throat went dry, and he was certain it was not due to the flu.

"Hyun...Hyunjin?"

"Seungmin-ah!" They said again, sniffling pathetically, "Why...why did we break up?"

"But you-"

Seungmin could almost hear his heartbeat pulsating through his ears, deafening along with the headache. Although the pain he had once felt in his head and almost been transferred to his heart and chest, because this whole situation was nothing short of a nightmare.

"But you broke up with me!"

Unknown to him before, the quiet chattering and slight laughter that was present in the background of the conversation immediately stopped after Seungmin replied with equal amounts of emotion, a deep muttering of 'oh shit' heard in the back.

"I know!" Hyunjin cried, seemingly unphased by the person urging him to stop talking on the other side, "But I regretted it for so long after that. Why did it happen?"

If Seungmin was shocked, upset and annoyed before- he was angry, emotional and incredibly pissed off now.

Because he had asked himself the same questions for months after he was dumped. Hyunjin was the one who suddenly sprang the break up on their otherwise happy and blossoming relationship. If anything Seungmin should he the one drunk calling and asking for answers.

Seungmin took a shaky breath in, before sputtering out an intangible string of curses and questions, "What the fuck is this? Why are you calling me now? This was in highschool Hyunjin!"

He did a double take when he saw Minho's cat (which for some reason, tended to spend the night in his apartment) walk into his bedroom, and flop down by the radiator, "How did you even get my number?"

"Hyunjin maybe you should..." someone else said on the line, and Seungmin's blood boiled.

"Oi! Give the phone to someone else."

"But I want to talk to you~~ and explain myself!" Hyunjin slurred out, "I'm so sorry but let me just-"

"Hyunjin. Give the phone to someone else." Seungmin snapped, cringing when he felt his chest wheeze.

After a few moments of shuffling from an obviously displeased Hyunjin and distant talking, a deep and obviously nervous person greeted him.

"Uh...hello?"

"He's drunk?" Seungmin asked incredulously, a mixture of worry and anger all travelling through his veins, "And you just let him call me?"

"We...we didn't think you'd even pick up- or that it was even you! He just-"

Ah, there it was, the headache Seungmin had just managed to subdue.

So he pulled the phone away from him, were the husky voiced man with a slight accent continued to rattle of words that made no sense like 'Instagram live' and 'New movie', even the word 'Flabbergasted'...which was one too many syllabus at a time like this, and frowned.

His hand hovered over the end call for a moment, when the quiter sound of Hyunjin going 'Kim Seungmin don't cut the phone-'. Seungmin's frown deepened, as he ended the call.

Suddenly feeling brave, he also completely shut off his phone- and for good measures- threw it onto the carpet next to Minho's cat, which flinched and hissed in retaliation at the dimming phone.

With a final sigh, a dreaded look up to the ceiling as if to say 'why god- why me?', he flopped back onto his pillow and screw his eyes shut.

Thankfully, sleep came easier this time, as he was both mentally and physically exhausted.

However, what felt like literally 10 minutes later; loud and relentless knocking echoed through his head, followed by none other than the epitome of all things evil and cursed.

"KIM SEUNGMIN I CAN NOT FUCKING BELIEVE YOU-" Jisung shouted from outside the front door, so loudly that even Minho's cat bared his teeth excusingly from the bedroom.

"OPEN UP BITCH! YOU'VE GOT SOME EXPLAINING TO DO!"

Oh god, why me?
