Warnings: Slight panic description
~~~~~♡~~~~~
Just as Virgil worked up the courage to talk to Roman and let words slip out, the bell rang, signalling the start of their three minute passing time.
He let out a small sigh, keeping his head down as he quickly shuffled out the door before the rest of his class. Looking around, he saw one of his best friends; Logan.
Now, "Violet" Wills and Logan Meyer becoming friends is the kind of thing everyone would've expected and knew was coming, but were still surprised to see. Like a very predictable ending to a movie that still catches you off guard due to all the subtle things that said a different outcome was in store.
Virgil walked up to Logan, who stood at the corner edge of a wall as he reviewed his schedule. Virgil tapped the walking dictionary's shoulder - and yes, Logan does appreciate the nickname when, and only when, Virgil says it - and watched him turn to look up.
"Hey," Virgil smiled slightly, offering a two-fingered salute as he usually did.
Logan smiled back, putting his schedule in the side pocket of his backpack as he gave his usual "Greetings," with a small wave.
"So, what classes do you have today?" Virgil really wanted to hang out after school, and wanted to know the best course to get out at the end of the day. This would also dictate whether or not he'd even ask.
"Last period I have band, on the top floor," Logan responded, probably figuring that his friend wanted to meet up and go get something to eat. "What about you?"
"Homeroom, all the way downstairs." Okay, Virgil loved homeroom, but today this was a miniature curse. Him and Logan were on opposite ends of the school last period.
"Do you want to meet in the foyer?" Logan suggested, thinking of the buildings layout.
A quiet pause to think. "Yeah, alright, that works. See you then?" Virgil was glad, showing it through a smile, and held out his arms for a hug.
"See you then." Logan hugged Virgil, even though hugs weren't at all "his thing", which made the action that much more special.
Virgil waved, to which Logan waved back, as he made his way to the stairs. He had gym now, so off he went. Very quickly. Especially since the bell just rang and he was probably late, and panic started to settle in and-
Virgil saw a few of his classmates go through the gymnasium door, smiling in relief as he moved out of the way of the students in the halls. If only he had those reflexes out of the halls.
As he walked through those doors, he got hit in the face by someone's hand, his cheek getting scratched.
"Oh my goodness, I am so sorry." He heard as he hissed from the sudden shock of the impact. "Are you alright?"
"Yup, I'm fine," Virgil breathed out, taking a few more breaths to ease himself, shaking his head as he released the last one and stood upright from his slightly hunched position.
"Okay, that's good. Again, sorry Vee." He saw that the student who accidentally hit him was a classmate who went by Nyx, in the other homeform that was in their gym class. They were sort of a reminder that Queer individuals could exist in this school without much consequence, which made him feel better about maybe coming out someday.
But for now he'd go into the change room of the gender he was assigned at birth, switch his shirt, get his water bottle, and head out as soon as possible. After that?
Go through gym class, then head to homeroom before lunch.
It was murky outside, so the girls stayed inside with the boys for this class.
The gym was fairly quiet, save for the chatter of his classmates. That never seemed to stop. A few minutes later were shouts and shoes squeaking against the floor as people walked across the room, the instructors shouting tips and guiding posture and such. Though he kept looking at Roman, figuring that now wasn't a good time to talk.
It was all over in what felt like half an hour, even if the periods were all fifty minutes. Getting out of the change room before the bell was nice, though. Virgil spent this time walking to Roman, on the other side of the gym, and trying to start a conversation.
Keyword; trying.
Sometimes it’ll feel like your very soul is gripping at your voice, stopping you from speaking.
Virgil made it through regardless, managing a simple “Hi,” which sent a wave of relief through his entire being as he listened to Roman’s response. He could work with this.
