I love running. The feeling of my steps pounding against the Earth, the soft green grass between my toes, the smell of the soil and pine, the wind whistling through the trees almost as if they're cheering me on. I love running. The freedom. The serenity of it.
I slow down my pace as I reach my destination, I take in the sight of it. The shrubbery surrounding the crystal clear water of the lake my mother used to take me to. Our sacred place. The sunlight shines through the bushes, kissing my tanned skin almost as if the Gods were kissing me.
I twirl my midnight black hair around my finger with one hand while I lean back against my other one after I sit down on the bank of the catchment of water, placing my feet into the coolness of the lake. I wiggle my toes with a smile. I love this place.
My mother used to bring me here after her and my father had a fight. My mother is a full witch, one of the most powerful ones in my coven. She was amazing. An absolute angel and a blessing to this earth. My father was an Alpha of the Night Prowler Pack. A werewolf. A bad man.
My father met his mate at the age of nineteen and continued to be with her until he was twenty-four, the day the Alpha's mate was killed by a rogue. You could say he has never been the same since that day. He resorted to drinking, sleeping around, and hurting people. That's how he met my mother. My mother was out collecting herbs for a potion when my father marked her by force and raped her. That was how I was conceived. My father beat my mother. Every day. I could sometimes hear her screams through the thin walls of the Alpha's house on his pack lands. As I grew older she started sleeping next to me every night to avoid the nightmare that was my father.
He murdered her in cold blood. He found out she was planning to take me and leave to go back to her old coven. He then proceeded to kill himself.
And I witnessed it all.
I ran. I ran straight towards where my mother was planning to take me. To her old coven. They welcomed me with open arms, especially Adeline, at the time she was a young twenty year old woman who took on the motherly role of a thirteen year old teenager. She was amazing, but she never filled the shoes my mother left the day she died.
Today it has been ten years since she passed away, ten years without a mother. Without my mother.
From that day onwards I decided to live everyday as if it was my last, to forgive and forget because holding grudges will be the thing that kills you in the end. I don't hold a grudge towards my father, he was a bad man who did very bad things but if anything I pitied him more. He was a suffering man who took all of his suffering out on everyone else, he made bad decisions.
I try to live as positively as possible. I never know when I am going to die, but I want to die with no regrets if and when it happens.
I watch my reflection ripple in the lake, my violet eyes staring back at me. The colour of a witches eyes determines the amount of power they have.
Brown is weak
Green is mediocre
Blue is middle
Purple is strong
Silver is stronger
And gold is the strongest a witch could ever be, well at least the strongest witch that has ever been reported anyway.
My mother had purple eyes just like me. She's taught me everything I know. She would tutor me in my powers ever since I was younger behind my fathers back. He never noticed my eye colour change because he was always drunk, and let's be honest he never cared about me anyway.
This is the same lake where my mother died. So many happy memories and then one massive painful downfall.
I don't live with the coven anymore, I'm more of a free runner. I like to travel a lot. I've been to many places around the world. This is my first time back here in a long time.
I unzip my backpack and bring out my water bottle, dipping the opening into the clear water to refill it before pressing it against my lips and swallowing its contents. I wipe my mouth with a sigh and screw the lid back on.
A decade without an angel.
I rummage back through my backpack and bring out a packet of chips, opening the bag and munching on the snack in silence, just listening to the nature around me.
I've got all of my witch powers. I'm an elemental; earth, air, fire, water and ice. Just like my mother. The only aspects of being a werewolf are that I can run fast and all of my senses are heightened. I don't have a wolf so therefore I cannot shift.
As the sun starts to set I unroll my sleeping bag and slip inside, using my backpack as a pillow. I zip myself inside before the darkness of the night surrounds me.
I close my eyes with one last thought before sleep takes over me,
I miss my mother.
