I sit in the cafeteria, waiting. Laura and Mimi walk over, holding their lunch trays.
"Laura, did you hear about Nicole's trip to the mall? I saw her there - with her mom!"
"O-M-G! Really?"
They sit down in front of me. "Are you guys talking about our friend Nicole?" I ask. "What other Nicole would we be talking about, Ellie?" Mimi asked me with exasperation. I swear I could've heard Laura call me an idiot under her breath.
Nicole comes to sit with us at the lunch table. "Hey guys! Sorry I had to go to the bathroom." Mimi rolled her eyes. Laura smiled. "I sure am gonna miss this place. I can't believe next week is our last week of eighth grade!" Nicole continued. Laura and Mimi didn't confront Nicole about seeing her at the mall with her mom. I mean, they never confront people. All they do is gossip. They never actually know what's actually happening, either.
"So, Nicole, what's up?" I ask. "Nothing much. Well, actually, I went to the mall yesterday with my mom to find a birthday gift for my sister," she replies. Laura and Mimi giggle. God, they can be so immature.
