'But sir, I don't understand. We have all the research, all the prove to show that this will work?' The woman stood with a straight posture, keeping her gaze focused on the man sitting behind the desk in front of her.

'I told you this before Dr. Middler, the governments have forbidden it. Therefore I cannot grand you permission.' His hands were folded in front of him, and his expression stood stern. 'It doesn't matter how much research you've performed, it just won't happen. Move on to something else.'

Dr.Middlers hands clenched.

'I've worked my entire career to get this research. You just want me to throw it away?' Her voice grit. He kept looking her straight in the eye, not backing down. But neither was she.

'There is nothing I can do for you. Goodday Dr. Middler.' He spoke sternly.

'But sir-' 'Goodday!' He raised his voice, making it clear this conversation was over.

She gave him one last glare before storming out, slamming the door shut behind her.

----------

Dr. Middler walked out the building, her heels clicking angrily against the concrete. Her colleague waiting outside in the car for her. She got in and threw the door closed with force.

'I'd prefer it if you treated my car a bit more gently Dr. Middler.' The young man next to her said. His wavy hair coming down to his neck, a relaxed posture that starkly contrased her tense one. 'I'll assume we didn't get permission?'

'Those bastards. We're working our asses off, come up with good results, and they still won't give us permission.' She said with venom.

'Well, our workfield isn't exactly publicly accepted. Not many are comfortable with our branch of experimentation.' He sighed as he started the car and drove off. The car softly purring from the engine.

'Fear is for the uneducated, it halts progress.' Her eyes held fire in them as she kept her gaze to the road in front of them.

'Well, the difference between fear and beauty is knowledge. So, what are we going to do now Alecia?'

Silence fell over the car as Alecia fell into her thoughts. The buildings passed by as they drove. From high corperate buildings to simple neighbourhoods. A layer of snow decorated the roofs while the sun shining made it seem even brighter. It didn't take them long to drive out of the city into the thick forest that covered most of the land. The dusk slowly started to set.

'Jake.' Alecia finally broke the silence. He gave a hum in response while keeping his eyes on the road.

'When we get back, start phase one.' He snaps his head to her in shock.

'But we don't have permission?'

'I'm not gonna let some stuck up higher ups halt our progress. Find two volunteers to bare the embryo's. We'll compensate them and have them swear to secrecy.' Her face stood determinded.

'Are you sure?' Jake asks with concern in his voice. He had never done anything illegal before and thus had his doubts. But he swallowed them all as he saw the look on Middlers face.

'We'll be cautious. Put them down the second they're full grown. We just need to see how they grow and if they can sustain themselves as a species. We won't fall into greed.'

Jake sighs. Once Alecia made up her mind there was no changing it.

'Very well. I'll send out the mails tonight. Let's hope this works out.'

'It will. I promise.'
