They were all being silly, but they didn't understand how close she was to breaking so their silliness just pushed her over the edge without meaning to.
They pushed her over the edge, and she fell deep into the pool. She could swim but she didn't want to, and she let herself sink to the bottom. She held her breath wishing to drown wishing she would sink but she floated back up needing air. It's hard to die with a mind that wants it so bad but a body that fights against it. Her skin and clothes soaked; it hid the tears that were rapidly flowing down her face. She was done, she couldn't take it anymore. Only some of them had seen inside her head...but did they know how she worked well enough to see inside her head now? She climbed out of the pool, the voices around her muffled in her ears. The night stars twinkled beautifully in the sky as she ran fast and hard. Water droplets flew behind her like a storm as the wind whipped them from her body. But not even the wind was strong enough to stop the flow of them on her cheeks. She saw the tree and though scared of the height, climbed quick and high. She had been bottling it up lately and it had gotten to the point where the pressure in the bottle was too much, and the glass had now shattered. She couldn't take another second of it, she just wanted to leave. She couldn't explain why... all she knew was the feeling she felt was so strong and everything she had done to kill it hadn't worked. Breaking this promise was the only thing she hadn't tried. Sleeping only works for a while but death is much, much longer. She finally reached the top and stepped out on the branch, smiling as she sobbed her arms held out at her sides. And then what? She leaned forward whispering, "Goodbye darkness, you were never my friend."
She leaned forward but was then violently pulled back. He embraced her pulling her close to him not letting her go. She fought for a moment, trying to get free but then gave up. She began to sob more violently, and she let herself crumble in his arms. He held her close and stroked her hair as he rocked her back and forth, whispering, "It's okay...you'll be okay...I promise...I'm here..."
She wrapped her arms around him, leaning in and she cried, "Please don't let me go."
