"You actual plonker"
"Shut up Levi I forgot"
"Ari you're an absolute plonker"
"Ok now I'm just being ganged up on both of you. Quiet" I said to both Levi and Naomi. We sat outside out class, all three of us in college. It was a dreary monday morning and we sat outside our psychology class, where of course I had forgotten the homework. Again.
Levi sat scrolling on her phone and shaking her head whilst Naomi went through some of her notes. I sat on the ground with my back against the wall and my notebook on my knees as I committed to a sloppy attempt at the homework due today.
"You should have done it days ago" Naomi said in her sing song voice. I looked up to glare at her for a second and she just smiled smugly back at me. I rolled my eyes as I went back to my homework. I had just about finished it when our jolly and upbeat lecturer plodded down the hallway with a smile. I jumped up from the floor and stuffed the paper into my tattered backpack.
We took our usual seats at the back, and I sat at the very corner. Naomi beside me and Levi next to her.
"I fuckin hate these desks man. Its like the bloody last supper here" I said with a sigh. Levi laughed as she took off her pink hoodie. Naomi chuckles and took off her black and green jacket. I opted to keep on my two sizes too big purple hoodie with a black and yellow logo that read "Zombie Outbreak Response Team" with a biohazard symbol. My long black hair fell in loose curls as I pulled my hood down and pushed my glasses up.
Levi sighed in, not anger but definitely annoyance. This wasn't her favourite class, but I suspect it's just because it's a Monday. The way our college worked was that full time was only three days a week, 9-4pm. It was good for those with kids or a part time job. Both Levi and I worked part time but not at the same place. She worked shifts at a care home down town, and I however worked in a call centre for a bank. It wasn't much but it paid my bills. Our college days were a Monday, Wednesday and a Friday, which means we get to sleep in tomorrow.
"I'm here! I'm here!" came the voice to the fourth of our friend group. Lily ran in late, apologizing to our lecturer as she sat down next to Levi. She was put of breath, probably ran up the stairs and sprinted to class. She was always late, so i could even say that this was an unusual occurrence.
Class seemed to drag as our lecturer rambled on and on about Sigmund Freud. Our group mainly spoke quietly to each other and shared memes in our group chat. Every now and then I got and sent messages to my boyfriend James, who worked full time and wasnt in college. If it wasnt him, it was one of my best friends, Victor, who lived miles away in England. When class was over we were quick to escape the classroom.
"Oh, who's for a roll?" I asked the girls, digging my purse out of my hoodie. Levi nodded eagerly and clasped her hands together.
"Only if its from Campbells!" She said as Lily nodded. "Best burger van in Briersouth"
Our cold hands were soon wrapped around warm rolls, appreciated in the cold weather in the absence of gloves.
"Ugh, you know, if the zombie apocalypse were to hit, I could never have one of these again" I said, biting into a bacon and potato scone roll hungrily. Silly of me to miss breakfast really.
"I would miss coffee. So much." Levi said, dragging out the "so".
"I don't think I'd miss much, due to the fact I'd probably actually die within five minutes" Lily said, an egg and bacon roll in her hand. "Honestly, the only thing I can run is my mouth, how would I outrun a horde of them motherfuckers?"
"I think I'd live. Just in a constant state of grief about my coffee" Levi said with an exaggerated sad face before dropping it and taking a bite of her own roll.
"Lads. As long as we follow the plan, we'll all live" I said with a smile, confident in us. "A week to get to the old primary school before we make our way up north to Levi's aunts farm, fence that bitch off and live our lives."
That had been our apocalypse plan for a few years, but I have always had a variation of it since I was about thirteen. Eight years later still no apocalypse, and my emergency zombie survival kit bag is sitting in my wardrobe, gathering dust and feeling lonely.
"Did you hear that a few people in the city have got that disease?" Naomi asked.
"What? Roosters disease?" Levi asked in confusion.
"Yeah its just, don't even worry about it. Its just another illness. Everyone gets the mega fear when something like this happens. Ebola, swine flu, covid etc. We'll be fine you hypochondriac." Lily said whilst looking at Samantha, no time for this nonsense.
"I don't know Lily" I said with a joking smile. "What if this is the start of that zombie apocalypse?"
