My hazel eye twitched as I stood in line to get my index card.
I was in yearbook class and it definitely was not what I signed up for, but it was too late to get my schedule changed. Yearbook consisted of me and every other person in the class, aside from the editors, interviewing students. The person, class
number, and reason for needing them were all on the index card. That may not sound bad, but when you have social anxiety as I did it was just about the worst thing you could do.
Finally, it was my turn. "Just ask all these people the same question and take a picture of all of them individually." My editor, Mikey, stated as he handed me the index card.
I read the question and smiled. Finally, a day where I only had to talk to one person I didn't know. I looked back up at the male and nodded thanking him for the assignment. I don't know why I thanked him every time I got a card it just became a habit I guess.
I then headed out of the small room and to the first classroom. "C5... great just my luck the one teacher that hates me for no reason." I slowly dragged my feet until I stood in front of the brown door. "Okay, I'm looking for Jessica Hult. Shouldn't be that hard to say right?" My heart rate started to pick up and I started to fidget. I took in a deep breath and knocked. The kid closest to the door opened and I stepped in. "Hi I'm in yearbook and I need Jessica Hult."
The teacher glared at me and motioned for a girl to stand up. I smiled at the blonde girl; she looked at me and her sapphire eyes lite up. I opened the door holding it open.
"Hi, Evey! What's going on?" She asked as she took her earbuds out of her ears.
I took out my phone, which was in my front pocket, and opened the voice memos app. "I just need to ask you a question for the yearbook and take your picture after."
Her face fell. "Seriously? I hate pictures especially today I look gross." As you could probably imagine she was a popular girl so she always looked "gross".
"Pfft- you look fine. I'll give you time to prepare by asking you a question."
She sighed. "Okay, so what's the question?"
I hit the record button before asking, "What do you like most about being on the varsity soccer team?"
"What do I like most about the team?" She hummed quietly. "Oh, that's easy I like how everyone treats each other." She smirks at me. "Even when they don't get to play because an iron wall gets in their way."
I hit pause and my lips pulled upward labeling the recording. "Okay, now for the picture." I switched to the camera and got ready to take.
"Ugh fine." She got into the middle of the hall and she placed a smile on her face.
I took the picture and gave her a thumbs up. "Looks good."
"It better." She gazed at the card I still had in my hand. "Who else do you have to go to?"
I looked up at her. "I also have to talk to Cameron and a varsity boy."
She gasped. "Oo you should get to know him! This is your chance to get out there."
I just snorted. "No thanks."
She rolled her eyes. "Damn I forgot that your life only consists of soccer and that anime stuff." She grabbed the door handle. "At least put in a good word for me." Then she disappeared on the other side of the door.
I groaned. "No matter how hard I try I will never understand populars." I gazed at my index card to see who was closer. "Kay Cameron then Leon Thomas."
I went to interview Cameron and as I expected she had the same reaction as Jessica. They were nice, but people like them just wore me out.
"See you, Evelyn." The brunette waved and went back inside her class.
Then I dragged my feet along to Leon's classroom, B15. The door was opened and I went over to the teacher's desk. "I need Leon Thomas for the yearbook."
She nodded and pointed to a boy with dark brown hair who had his eyes fixed on his paper.
I thanked her and walked off to his desk and spoke. "Um, could you step out into the hall for a minute? I just need to ask you a question for the yearbook."
He kept his eyes on his paper. I observed him more closely and sighed. He has airpods in his ears. I lightly poked him.
He flinched and slowly looked up. "Yes?" He didn't seem cold but he didn't seem particularly nice either.
"Um sorry, I just need you in the hall for the yearbook." I avoided eye contact.
"Oh okay." He set down his pencil and took the airpods out of his ears.
I stepped out into the hall once more. I took out my phone once again to get ready for his response. I was about to ask the question before he interrupted me.
"Hey aren't you on the girl's varsity soccer team?" He arched a brow while looking down at me.
I finally made eye contact. "Y-yeah."
"You don't look like a junior or Senior though."
My eye twitched. It wasn't the first time someone had commented on my looks, though he was right I wasn't a Junior or a Senior. Still, I was self-conscious about my height, I was very short for my age. "Because I'm a sophomore."
His eyes widened and he covered his mouth his shoulders bouncing up and down. "Ha... sorry I just expected the oh so famous iron wall to be taller. Instead, you're a freaking shrimp."
My face heated up. "Piss off! I don't go insulting your freakishly long legs!"
"Okay, okay, Settle down. So what's this interview?" It seemed he finally calmed down.
I took a deep breath and said, "it's a question about the soccer team." I tapped the record button. "What do you like most about being on the varsity soccer team?"
He didn't hesitate to answer. "I honestly like how the guys and I work together as a team. We get along well which also makes it easier to point out flaws that we may have. They're honestly like a family to me."
I just stared at him with my mouth opened slightly.
He snorted and pressed the pause button for me. "What's wrong? You look like you saw a white guy running around naked."
I was then snapped back into reality. "For one, what kind of analogy is that? And second, the hell? Why the specifics?"
"Just wanted to get your attention you seemed distracted. Need anything else?"
"I just need a picture."
Now he hesitated. "Is it okay if I give you a picture at practice? We're joined today and I chose to have a lazy day today." He was right he looked extremely lazy his hair was all messed up and he was in a sweatshirt and sweat pants.
"I really won't ever get you populars," I mumbled under my breath. "Yeah, that should be fine. I'm sure Mikey will be happy." Though Mikey may have been fine with it, it meant I couldn't get my log signed off and that day happened to be the day they were due.
"Great, see you at practice miss iron wall." He flashed a smile and waved. Leaving me alone and annoyed.
