Halt once said, "By the ghost of Barry Boru, no," to which Crowley replies, "sounds like an interesting person," ('The Tournament at Gorlan'). Quite interesting is that real world history has a man by the name of Brian Boru.
According to Encyclopaedia Britannica [https://www.britannica.com/biography/Brian], Brian Boru was born in 941 near Killaloe, Ireland. Ireland, of course, being what Hibernia is based off of and where Halt was born. The Ranger's Apprentice universe doesn't run at the same pace as the real world, collapsing hundreds of years of history (Vikings, Romans, Mongols) into 40 years of the mid-600's, and so just by being born before 1500 indicates this Brian Boru as the possible inspiration for Barry Boru.
Brian was a King of Munster, and eventually became the high King of Ireland, which earned him great fame. He died in Clontarf, a name familiar to Clonmel. His sons were O'Briens, familiar to the O'Carrick last name of Halt. Perhaps there was a king of Clonmel called Carrick!
It's funny Barry Boru became a light curse, but I'd be a ghost too if I were hacked to bits in my old age.
