CHAPTER 2

Before Avery knew it, the limo had pulled up in the large circular driveway of her father’s Bel Air mansion. After thanking the driver, she hurriedly stepped out of the car and hurried towards the house. Well as hurriedly as a person could in 6-inch heels.

She threw open the huge oak double doors and slipped off her shoes before tip-toeing across the cool marble floor. Slipping undetected through the hallways, she found her dad, Andrew Wolfe, and her step-mum, Mia Bennett, lounging in the living room watching something on the huge flat-screen television. Avery was pleasantly surprised since with Andrew being a well-known movie director and Mia being a busy make-up artist; they barely had time to settle down to watch TV at home, let alone enjoy a cup of coffee for 10 minutes.

Avery grew suspicious. What was going on?

She slipped her shoes back on and coughed loudly, immediately catching their attention. Andrew whipped around in surprise; seeing his only daughter he hadn’t seen in weeks, he ran towards her and wrapped her in a warm bear hug and twirling her around in the air like she was still 6.

“Sweetie, you have no idea how much I missed you!” He whispered in her diamond-studded ears.

Avery smiled, pulling away to see her dad’s goofy grin. “Missed you too, dad,” she chuckled; ruffling her dad’s slightly dark brown hair – the one she inherited.

“Actually, I was busy as hell, so I forgot all about you,” Andrew teased, back-tracking on his words.

“Are you kidding me, when he heard you were finally coming home two weeks ago, he wouldn’t shut up about it. Thank goodness you’re home now.” Mia stepped forward – playfully hip-checking Avery’s dad away from her in the process – and hugged Avery as well. “Goodness, what a doll you’ve turned into. Look, you’re almost taller than me!”

Avery giggled at Mia’s pout. “Miss you too, Mia. And by the way, I’m wearing these 6-inch heels which are killing my feet.”

Mia laughed. Even the way Mia laughed was elegant. Her head was thrown back and her mouth covered her mouth daintily as she let out a chuckle. "I know my dear, my heart aches for you when I see you tottering around in those ridiculously high shoes."

Mia was really pretty. With a stylish chestnut brown bobbed hair and pale milky skin. Of course, her make-up was always perfect. She and Andrew had met on the set of one of the movies he had been filming. Mia and Avery had a pretty good relationship; she wasn’t like one of those nasty evil stepmothers. In fact, she was pretty cool for a stepmom. Mia would always giggle and try to get Avery to talk about any cute guy that crossed her path or always had Avery as a “practice model” to put her make-up on. Mia was already launching a new line of beauty products. Lip gloss of a variety of shades of pink that was SPF 30 and promised a glossy sheen that would attract attention.

"Yeah, i won't be surprise if by the time I turn 25, my toes are feet are deformed." Avery joked.

Once the hugging fest was over, everyone returned to the couch and watched the movie on TV, settling into a comfortable silence. Family Guy was on. After a while, Avery got bored of the silence and some cartoon characters talking and started bounced on the couch like a hyperactive kid.

“So what are we planning? I’ve already taken a 3 whole month break from my hectic jobs! Which was definitely tough to persuade my agent! Can you imagine? 3 whole months of NOT modeling, singing or acting! We are SO going jet-setting!” Avery paused to catch her breath and then proceeded to sing. “Paris, Milan, New York, La, here I co-” She stopped halfway when she noticed Andrew and Mia giving her blank stares. Her bouncing gradually slowed down.
