It was one chilly morning in September. Darkness still loomed outside. The street was quiet considering only a few automobiles had passed. Twenty four year old Keith laid motionless and shut-eyed on her four-poster bed with her fleece blanket wrapping her body and protecting her from the cold.
Her dainty figure across the bed suddenly jolted as her alarm clock went off. She was half-awake now and was adjusting to her surroundings. And then she came into view the reason of her abrupt wakefulness. She sat up and turned off her alarm clock. Gosh, it was six in the morning. How stupid of her not turning her alarm clock off on a Saturday! She silently cursed herself for this. Ugh, she must be awfully tired last night that she forgot all about it.
Keith Andrews was a photojournalist on a local newspaper, The Morning Herald, in Alaska. Her unmistakable talent in photography earned her awards locally and even in the international scene. She might be delicate but she was one hell of a photojournalist. She would recklessly go anywhere even in the most dreaded parts of the country to capture stories of insurgencies, wars, crimes, and drugs. The world was so twisted that she had dedicated her young life to reveal this truth to everyone. She was a high-spirited and a feisty female on top of all that. The bottom line - she fucking loved the danger of her job.
After waking up that early, she settled herself in the bathroom and took a warm shower. Her thoughts drifted in the past.

"Keith"...her mother called as she stumbled along the stairs. "I am coming Mom", she answered hurriedly. It was her first day as a senior in Everglades. She would not miss it for the world. "Just hurry up, okay? I'll drop you off to your new school. And I am going to be late in the office if you keep stalling." Her mother told her. She was living with her mom. Her dad died when she was six and her mom never remarried. Kirsten, her mom, worked for a real estate company allowing them to live a comfortable life.
Hastily, Keith got inside her mom's Civic and off they went. She was beaming with joy and anticipation as the car entered the gates of Everglades High School. Who would have thought that at her ripe age of sixteen this was her first time to ever really attend school? For Christ sake! She was home-schooled all her life. Her tutor was a kind-hearted, sweet old lady named Maggie who at the age of 57 decided to go back to England for good. She was distraught at first but the way Maggie curved a small smile and looked longingly to the wilds made her feel guilty. She knew Maggie missed her old place, the seaside village where she grew up. That was when she decided to let go. And Maggie was getting old extremely fast so who was she to intervene? And now, she would meet new friends and new teachers. Hopefully, a boyfriend as well. She blushed with those last thoughts in mind.
"Bye, sweetie. Be a good girl. Take care!" said her mom allowing her to whisk back to reality. Keith waved back to her mom as the car sped away.
A sigh of relief escaped her lips when she instantly found her room. Her mother was right about everything. She's got accomodating and witty teachers. The school was great. Its structure was built in the '50s so it has history written all over the place. Keith was drawn to its beautiful facade.
"This is surreal. I can't believe I'm part of this!"Keith squealed when someone patted her back. "Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" Inquisitive eyes stared at her. "Wow, you looked dumbfounded, sorry." The girl stated before turning away. But Keith managed to bring back her composure and answered somewhat timidly. "I...b-believe it's a good thing."
The girl smiled at her. "You must be new here. I'm Reece Winters. It's nice to meet you." Reece offered her hand and Keith shook it more forceful than intended. "I'm Keith Andrews. Glad to meet you."
