jheel comar was a young woman of humble beginnings. she was a rather grounded individual and had faced her fair share of adversity in life.
she most definitely did not come from an affluent background, and was not particularly acquainted with the finer things life had to offer.
fancy champagne.
million dollar sports cars.
billion dollar investments.
so how she found herself at one of the most sought after prestigious celebrations in the country, the highly esteemed topham gala, she did not know.
well, actually she did. she just happens to go to school with the grandson of the tophams, and was invited through a friend of a friend.
she was a mere 'plus one'.
she'd only agreed to go because of the grand opportunity she'd been given to sneak a taste of the 'luxurious lifestyle': a night at the dolloway (the fanciest hotel in town, complete with gilded doorknobs, an on-call butler for each room, and silk pajamas provided for each guest), free food imported from the finest delis, fishermongers and patisseries from around the world, and access to the city's most famous ballroom right at the heart of the dolloway.
and while she was grateful for the opportunity, she was now stuck with her friend the rest of the night. the same 'friend' that dragged her to the whole event.
jheel knew raine meant well; raine was the type of friend to annoy the shit out of jheel by bugging an anxiety-ridden social pariah to attend a fancy party where the recipient knew less than 3 people, but did it in high hopes of said pariah emerging from her thickened social shell after the night was over.
as stated before, raine had high hopes.
what she already knew though, was that jheel comar was not one to go out of her way to make conversation with strangers.
she, in fact, avoided it at all costs. unlucky for her, she was about to get sucked into yet another mind-blowing discussion about the idiocy of fiscal responsibilities allocated to wealthy teens with way too much time on their hands.
"mother prefers i get into the family business soon! who the hell does she think she is? doesn't she realize i'm too busy networking for my music career?"
"really? my dad promoted me to regional manager of the banks he owns. and i didn't even have to do jack shit!"
"guys, why worry about all that, when you could literally just move out, buy a yacht, and sail the world and party? that's what i've done and i haven't talked to my parents in months."
it was at this moment that jheel felt it in her best interest to interject and put those so far removed from regular society back in their place.
"well, rich guy, not all of us have millions of dollars to blow on a yacht just lying around. you should consider yourself lucky; so many would love to have the financial stability that you so take for granted," jheel sneered.
