I passed back through the dining area, feeling stares on the back of my head as I headed to my apartment. Desiree's statement earlier came back to me. "Shit!" I cursed, causing one of the agents coming in the opposite direction to glare at me disapprovingly. "Sorry..." I whispered. She shook her head slightly exasperatedly and strode past. Then I practically sprinted to the elevator and jammed the button for my floor. I dashed to my apartment, flinging open the door and turning on my top-of-the-line, SHIELD-issued computer. I opened my email, prepared to send a last-minute email to Wade. However, he had beaten me to it. A new email sat in the middle of my inbox, the subject reading "a bird told me..." The sender said that it was 'Deadpoolio the Awesomest'. I laughed, clicking on it. The contents were as follows:
"So, a little birdy told me your school is having a prom in two days. When, exactly, were you planning to tell me? I've got to make an emergency appointment with my tailor now."
I smiled and replied
"That was the shittiest promposal I've ever heard. Where's the love song? The chocolates? The declarations of undying love and never-ending praises of my impeccable beauty? You never know, I may have made plans to go with Alexander instead."
I hit send and waited. Sure enough, he replied in under two minutes.
"You actually had me gong for a minute there. Fine. *Gets down on one virtual knee* Paige Parker and Thea Anderson, your face is like the sun. Your lips are impeccably shaped. Your eyes pierce me like a thousand arrows every time I catch your gaze. Your hips are tantalizing, your curves surpass Aphrodite's. Baby, you're perfect, will you go to the prom with me?"
I cracked up. It was impossible to take him seriously over email.
"Not bad, lover boy. I think the last two sentences almost rhymed! Sigh... I suppose I've nothing better to do."
"You know you love me."
"You seem fairly confident about that... anyways, it's two days from now, so I'll meet you outside headquarters then at about 7."
"Sounds like a plan." He wrote back, sending me a selfie of himself on top of a skyscraper in full costume. "Does this count as formal dress?"
"Of course."
I breathed a quiet sigh of relief, closing the browser and turning off the computer. I picked up my recently washed clothes from the unit and folded them before storing them in the massive set of dresser drawers inside the walk-in closet. Shopping was surprisingly tiring, leading me to believe that Desiree must have an unlimited supply of energy.
I crashed down onto the bed, letting the wonderfully soft mattress suck me into sleep.
"Agent Arachne, your presence is required on level three. Priority level Cappa." I groaned, being unwillingly pulled out of my miraculously dreamless sleep by Maria Hill's voice emanating from my com unit.
Priority level Cappa? What did that mean again? My sleepy brain struggled to remember. Fury had mentioned something... Zeta was the lowest, Alpha was the highest, and anything above Delta was something serious... Shit!
I rolled out of my wonderfully warm bed, reaching automatically for the glasses I hadn't needed for a couple months now. All I managed to do was stub my toe rather painfully on a bedpost. I muttered a quiet curse, blinking away the spots in my eyes.
The digital clock on the bedside table said it was 3:42 am. In other words, it was still practically the middle of the night. I may be a superhero, but I was still a teenaged one. Complaining about the early wakeup call was completely acceptable, even if the world could very possibly be in danger.
