Logan sat alone in the corner of the bustling cafeteria, nose in a textbook and eyebrows furrowed in concentration.
Iodine. Symbol: I. Atomic number: 53. Discovered in 1811 by Bernard Courtois.
He stored information in his brain like a computer stored files, only this computer had no storage limit. At this moment, though, Logan couldn't focus. His thoughts were focused on Virgil, who was supposed to show up to school at the start of lunch. As if on cue, Virgil stumbled through the door and hurriedly sat next to Logan with his head down and an excused absence note in hand.
"Excused this time, Virgil?" Logan asked, returning his gaze to the book.
"Oh, um, yeah." Virgil looked down at the note as he finished the sentence, as if he hadn't known previously. He looked disassociated, not hyper analyzing his surroundings like he did usually.
"Is... something bothering you?" Logan asked, glancing at Virgil.
"Nah, nah. It's all good." Said Virgil dismissively.
"Something is bothering you. Your posture is more slouched than usual, you are far less attentive, and you just look sad in general."
Virgil groaned and covered his face with his hands. "You know me too well, Logan."
"What's wrong?" Logan closed his book and slid it into his backpack.
Virgil sighed and his shoulders sagged. "Insurance doesn't cover therapy anymore. Today was my last appointment. I might take a part time job to try and cover it...... I dunno." He said, his words muffled by his hands which were still covering his face.
"First of all, you don't need a part time job. You work hard enough already-"
"Well how else do you expect me to afford it? Or I could not go, and we both know how that turned out..." Logan shuddered at the memory. Virgil was in so much pain, not having anyone that he was comfortable with to release the thoughts swirling in his head. Every day, he ran out of class and hid in the bathroom until school was over.
"I could always help you with the expenses." offered Logan.
"Don't sweat it, I'll figure something out." Virgil huffed as he folded his arms on the table. The bags under his eyes were much more defined, as if he hadn't slept in weeks. Logan was about to reply when a boy in their year came up to their table. He had brown hair that some would call "stylish" and he wore a red Letterman jacket with a bright yellow "R" on the front.
Roman Price.
He was tailed by the lacrosse team and a boy of average height, wearing a blue sweater and a light gray scarf. He stood out amongst the rest of Roman's posse. The rest of them were big, tall, and frankly quite scary, while he was around 5"6 and scrawny compared to everyone else. The guys on the sports team were elbowing each other and laughing, while the smaller boy of the group looked nervous.
"How are my two favorite cumstains doing today?" Roman sneered, placing his hands on the lunch table. He had a sinister smile on his face, the kind that fills you with burning hot rage. The kind that makes you think "How can somebody be this cocky?" The team roared with laughter, while the boy in blue stayed quiet. Virgil's face flushed and Logan looked more irritated than anything. Suddenly, the boy whispered something into Roman's ear, that made him roll his eyes. "Babe, it's alright, I'm just playing around, right guys?" He got no response, as Virgil shrunk back into his hoodie and Logan started to grind his teeth. "Right?" Roman repeated. He tousled their hair and still got no response. "Ugh. You all know I'm just joking, right?" Roman asked the team. There was a chorus of hollers in response, someone even shouting 'You got it, cap!' from the back. Logan and Virgil still gave no response. "Whatever. Later, retards." Roman walked away, the team laughing and following behind him. The boy in blue faltered for a moment.
"I'm sorry about Roman, he can be kind of-" He said before getting cut off.
"Patton, come on!" Roman shouted.
"Oh, geez. Sorry!" Patton dashed off to catch up to Roman and the rest of the team, leaving Logan and Virgil speechless.
