The First Night

It was a clear summers night
Gentle, as the wind whispered in the trees
and the insects conversed across the forest
Eight small girls slept soundly in cabin #10
Five on top bunks, three on bottom
For what was the fun in sleeping so close to the ground?
From the corner of the cabin,
there was a small whimper
The whimper grew and turned into whines, which then turned into yells
The other girls and their counselor awoke with a start
As her duty, the counselor went to check on the girl in the corner
The girl was crying
The counselor inquired if the girl had a nightmare
The girl said yes
They went back to sleep
Soon, the yells started again
The little girls in the cabin were getting restless
For the long day of hiking and arts and crafts and music had tired them out
They longed to recharge for the next one
But the whimpers and yells in the corner of the cabin were keeping them from it
The counselor did not check on the yelling girl this time, for she wanted to sleep more than the rest did
So, the yelling and whimpering girl was left to fend off the terrors of the night by herself
She was scared and confused
She had never acted like this before, much less felt the fear that surged through her at that exact moment
Her mind would not be quiet and her heart was running a never ending sprint
Finally, she faded into sleep from sheer exhaustion
Though thankful to finally be rid of the awful feeling she had just felt,
somewhere inside her she knew
that she would get accustomed to the now unknown feeling
Somehow she knew, that there would be many more nights of feeling alone and helpless, of feeling scared of the unknown
It was too much to take in
So, as any young girl would do, she chucked the thought to the back of her head and finally fell asleep
She would worry about it later.
