Nightmares - Nat x reader

You walked slowly back through the tower after your late night gym session. Your body ached and you were ready to collapse and give into sleep. You made your way through the dark curved hallway. You heard a small thudding noise but you kept moving thinking nothing of it until you heard a blood-curdling scream. Your body tensed up ready to fight. You heard the scream rip through the tower walls again and you knew it was coming from Natasha's room. Your body moved quickly down the hall and through her bedroom door, ready to fight whatever was pulling these torturous screams from the redhead. When your mind caught up to your body's movements you could see in the dimly light room that Nat was still sleeping in her bed, but she was thrashing around and clutching the sheets as another agonizing scream tore through her body. She was having a nightmare. The guys had told you about the nights that Nat had nightmares and how badly they affected her, although she would never talk about it. you wanted to do something, anything to help the poor woman who was clearly in such distress.

You couldn't just walk over and wake her though, god she'd probably kill you before you got the chance. the way she was moving and thrashing around told you she was fighting someone. You didn't want to get hurt but you didn't want her to suffer. You moved quickly and quietly to the end of her bed before moving swiftly and pinning her arms to the bed and anchoring her by straddling her waist. Now that she couldn't hurt you, you tried to gently wake her up.

"Nat...Nat... it's okay" you whispered to her, close enough to her now you could see the tears running down her face and how previous tear stains glistened in the dim light. She wasn't quite awake yet but her body relaxed enough for you to let her arms go.

You moved one of your hand to wipe away the tears from her drenched cheeks, you'd never seen her cry before. She was one of the strongest Avengers and acted like nothing ever bothered her. you could see emotions floating around in her green eyes sometimes but they were always gone before you could realize what they were. Natasha Romanoff was a master at hiding her feelings so you seeing this made her very vulnerable.

"Hey, it's okay, it's just a dream. You're okay" you whispered as her body continued to shake. You moved from your position on top of her and sat beside her shaking body. Nat moved her body to curl up under your arm. Sobs still ripping through her body. She was yet to open her eyes, but she knew it was you and she felt comfortable around you. You held her tightly and played with her hair as she calmed down in your embrace.

The assassin normally hated any type of affection and would normally bat your hands away had you tried to touch her. she'd even accidentally knocked out Steve once when he tried to hug her from behind on her birthday. She instantly went into fight mode and Steve had spent the day on the couch with a concussion. She wasn't a touchy-feely kind of person and never shared anything personal with anyone on the team, so having her curled up under your arm while you soothingly played with her hair was something you never thought would happen

You had only been on the team for about 5 months but in that time you had developed some very deep feelings for the redhead. She was the one who had trained you when you first came to S.H.E.I.L.D and you had developed a friendship with the girl. You didn't even realize you were falling for her until it was too late. You hadn't told anyone on the team about your sexuality let alone about your feelings for Nat. that was until Clint had overheard your phone call to your best friend. When you realized he had heard you made him agree to not tell a soul with a promise of his murder if he did. To which he agreed and wandered off with a smile.

Nat's body had stopped shaking now and her sobs had gone away. She looked up at you with through her glassy green eyes. "thankyou (y/n)" she whispered.

"It's okay Nat" you whispered back to her looking into her beautiful green eyes, "I'm just glad you're okay, and that you didn't kill me while I was trying to wake you". She giggled. God that was the cutest sound you'd ever heard in your life. She tucked her head into your shoulder.

"I'm sorry if I woke you" she mumbled, "I just have these terrifying dreams sometimes" she shuddered.

"Hey, it's okay. You didn't wake me. And you don't have to tell me about your dreams, I know they must be really bad for you to get scared the way you did tonight" you whisper back to her.

She sat up, her normal self returning quickly now that she had calmed down. "what are you doing up anyway?" she asked quizzically.

"I couldn't sleep so I went down to the gym for some late night training. On my way back up I heard you scream..." you say trailing off slightly.

Nat looked down at her hands playing with her fingernails "I'm sorry you had to see that" she whispered "normally I can wake myself up and it doesn't get that bad" she looked up at you her eyes brimming with tears again, before she quickly pushed them back.

"It's okay Nat" you answer softly. "there is nothing to be embarrassed about, it happens, it's okay"

"thankyou (y/n)" Nat says to you before letting out a yawn.

"I will let you go back to sleep," you say to her moving a stray piece of hair behind her ear. Before moving your body to get out of her bed.

Nat unexpectedly leans forward catching your lips with a soft kiss that sends your heart exploding in your chest. "stay with me tonight" she asks after breaking the kiss and leaning her head against yours.

"of course" you reply before catching her lips in a searing kiss. You feel her smile into the kiss before you pull away. Laying in the bed she curls up into the gap between your arm and your shoulder, you hold her tightly as you both drift into a peaceful sleep.
