CHAPTER 1
It was inevitable: the smell of sweat and blood just drove the vomit up Amber's throat. She lent over, letting the contents of her stomach spill out onto the floor. Todd stood there, starring at the deflated, rotten corpse of what once was there friend.
"He.... He tried to kill us" Todd stammered.
Amber stood up straight, reclaiming her dignity. She shoved her revolver back in her belt and swung around to face the other repulsive bodies draped over the rusty metal railings and stairs.
"it's what the plague does Todd, I thought you knew that by now" he reloaded his magnum and held it erect pointing down a dark corridor towards what they hoped was the exit.
"All clear" He whispered as he continued striding over the dead.
*Flash back*
It all happened with a bright flash of light and a loud bang, as the school erupted into flames. All She could hear from that point on wards were the screams of the people all around, as they ran like a horde of madmen, stomping on all those who had fallen down onto the ground. It was like a scene from the movies, as buildings collapsed one after another, crushing the people like they were mere ants. They saw the zombies come from every direction, if they didn't get out no they would be trapped. Amber watched from the car window. The horrendous screams from the dying people outside, echoed in Amber's ears. The car started with a small thump. The exhaust created a low pitched growl and slowly edged off the path. With 4 other cars behind them they took off through the town. The streets were empty, every house abandoned, all of there occupants were "safe" in the school. Next to her sat Todd, her best friend. She wouldn't describe him as nerdy, although his "Star Wars" obsession was out of control.
"It's gonna be okay" he whispered, the sound echoing around the car like a ringing bell.
Everyone turned there heads to them. Many of the faces red and flooded with tears. Slowly Amber looked back, all she could see now was the black smoke, big and bold against the skyline like a flare. All she could feel was guilt. What had she done?
Slowly the cars moved up the country towards Scotland in the same triangle formation they came in. No one knew this would happen, they all thought it was going to be a minor fire. They had been staying in the school since the outbreak started. Everyone in the building sleeping rough and in sleeping bags, but there was enough space and food and it was better than outside. Monsters round every corner, craving human flesh and blood. Craving there entrails. They had runs every week, looking for food and sometimes the odd book or comic. After only a month of living at the school they lost the main lobby to the blighters, and many people two. The 52 survivors gathered in the separate tech building. People started to create tools from metal saws. They fort there way through the car park and made sure they had a clear exit if they ever needed it, which they did!
The cars moved swiftly on down the main road. So far they had only come across one obstacle, a flaming truck, but luckily they managed to sneak past with out disturbing any more of the munchers. The cars only carried children. 25 at the most. Finally they reached a small cross road. It was surrounded by a small forest. The trees motionless. No wildlife in sight. It was them things Amber and Todd mist most. The cold midsummer breeze and wildlife. Hearing that silent whisper of the wind rippling through pine trees. The place populated and filled with wonder. Little beings popping there heads slightly above the tall grass. She passed them and sighed. They had been driving for at least 4 hours now. Everyone in the car had now become immune to the smell of antiseptic and the monotonous drone. Slowly just as Todd and Amber were drifting off to sleep they hit what they though was a small bump, but was really the severed hand of a dead beast.
*end of flash back*
He stalked towards Amber in her moment of terror and she froze, unable to peel her eyes away from his ghastly towering features. His face was sunken in, eyes unfocused. His mouth twitched and drooled as if craving for something, anything, Amber. The smell of his rotting face made her stomach churn and it was all she could do is make sure not vomit then and there, again. His nails were dark and bloody, but She wasn't sure if it was his blood dripping from them. Finally Amber saw his gross discoloured skin close enough to see that it was falling apart. It was falling away from his muscle, his bones. Todd saw everything. She wasn't shooting it, why wasn't she shooting it? He raised his gun over the zombies head and shot. BANG. The bullet wrung out through the halls, most likely attracting more zombies.
"what happened to "it's what the plague does Todd"" he mimicked, in his desperate attempt to cheer her up.
"it's us against the the world now Amber, us against the world" he said, walking up to her and putting a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"No Todd, it's us against the world full of zombies" Amber had been acting very peculiar recently.
Sometimes she was tough and supportive, other times she was soft and in need of the support. They needed help. They just weren't surviving on there own anymore!
