Chapter Seven

Amelia sighed and rubbed her tired eyes. The bright sun was beginning to come up over the horizon now, and pale shafts of light rushed in through the window and illuminated the small and chipped desk she sat at, her eyes unfocused as she looked down at the papyrus scroll. She had been staring at the strange artifact for so long that she was beginning to see double, and yet she had still gotten no further in trying to decipher whatever message the Egyptian Gods were trying to give them.

After the God, Thoth, had given the scroll to Jason, they had gone right back to the motel and she began to try and figure out what was hidden behind the ancient and strange symbols. She knew that whatever knowledge this scroll held would be extremely important, and Amy had hoped to have it translated by now. Yet six hours later she still had nothing to show, and it was really starting to get annoying.

The little amount of knowledge she had on ancient Egyptian symbols was nowhere near enough, and she couldn't even begin to make heads or tails of what she was looking at. Then again, even the laptop sitting next to her that had multiple web pages about these symbols open didn't even help her. Anything that dealt with Gods and Goddesses was just too complicated, and it appeared that no one had even ever seen these kinds of symbols before. There wasn't a single page that had any translation for even one of them, and Amy was starting to lose hope.

It had taken a lot to get this scroll and they couldn't even use the damn thing. Jason had literally almost died and Vanessa had gotten the snot beaten out of her trying to get it. Although, while it was horrible that Jason had been hurt so bad, Amy couldn't really get upset about watching Vanessa get her teeth kicked in by one very angry and very powerful Goddess. In fact it had been a little fun to watch, and if Jason hadn't been seriously injured she might have liked to see more of Vanessa getting beaten up.

“Have you figured it out yet?” Vanessa suddenly asked lazily and with annoyance, pulling Amy out of her happy memories of her getting tossed around.

She looked over to the strange young woman who had now stood up from the uncomfortable looking chair near the window and took a few steps towards her. Her bright eyes shimmered in the light of a new day and the strange and almost mystical looking necklace she wore around her neck shined, as if it was absorbing the sunlight.

“Not yet,” Amy answered and let her frustration and anger seep into her voice. “Would you quit asking me about it every twenty minutes? It's really starting to get annoying!”

“And what else do you suggest I do? You won't even let me sleep in my own damn bed!” Vanessa snapped right back at her and now they both stared one another down, the air suddenly full of anger and distrust.

Vanessa wasn't wrong though: Amy refused to let her use the bed in her own motel room. It was for a good reason though, as Jason was already using it. He had been dead on his feet after his brush with Bastet and Thoth, and Amy could see that he had barely been able to keep his eyes open only half an hour after they had gotten back to the room. After she assured him that she would start getting the scroll translated he had crashed on the bed and had been dead to the world for the last five and half hours.

At one point, while Amy had been engrossed in trying to find what the symbols meant, Vanessa had tried to climb right into the bed with him. In fact she had actually managed to get under the covers and was about to cuddle up to him when Amy finally sensed that something was wrong and spun around to catch her. It had really pissed Vanessa off when Amy made it clear that she was not to get into bed with him, and it had even almost come to blows between them. But at the last second Amy convinced her that waking Jason up before he had enough time to rest wasn't a smart thing to do. The girl still wasn't happy about it though.
