"So, son what are you expecting for your birthday? Your grandma's coming down," Wayne, Lionel's, and Pharaoh's father spoke as their mother Samantha peeled potatoes for dinner.
"Well mama already thinks we're like African Royalty or something, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was his theme," 9-year-old Lionel said as he closed his history textbook.
Wayne chuckled and stared at Pharaoh waiting on his reply. To be 4 he was very wise for his age, both sons were; Samantha wouldn't have it any other way.
"Uh I don't know, I guess a piggy bank to stash my allowance."
"Out of all the gifts..." amused, Lionel headed towards the back.
"That's really what you want P.J?" Samantha queried.
Pharaoh shrugged, "I don't know what I want mama."
Wayne smiled, patting his back, "We'll figure it out,' he and Samantha shared a look then smirked. "Alright, what are we learning today?" he asked as he pulled up a chair next to Pharaoh.
"He took a break from his flashcards, Lionel let him play around with that damn word search booklet" Samantha answered as she began cutting the potatoes.
Nodding impressed, Wayne watched as Pharaoh tried to figure out what word went into eight across and one down.
"So how many words have you found?"
"Six!" He grinned.
"That's because I helped him," Lionel chuckled, joining them at the table.
"Well you are the oldest," Wayne smirked as he glanced at his wife.
If someone told him he would've fallen in love with his college sweetheart and gone off and got married and then created two sons; he would've told them they were balled face lie. Wayne was a big-time player and made that very clear that his college years were strictly for sleeping around, slight studying, and a lot of partying.
That was until he met Samantha, standing at 5'6 with the prettiest hazel green eyes, he just had to have her. He thought his smooth talk would win her over like it's done on many occasions but that was a laugh in his face.
For two years he chased after Samantha, after getting tired of cussing him out, she finally agreed to go on a date with him two months into their junior year, from there they graduated, got their careers in order then got married; 9 months later, they welcomed Lionel. He changed their lives forever, they spoiled him, showered him with books, and rewarded him with toy soldiers whenever he read two complete sentences or spelled his entire name correctly.
Years later, they welcomed their second baby boy, Pharaoh. Even though Samantha was hoping for a girl, she fell in love with her boys. Both boys were a perfect mixture of both parents but took after their mother with her hazel green eyes. Wayne knew the moment he laid eyes on his boys that they would indeed pick up his bad traits and break a lot of hearts. One of the many reasons why he tried so hard to ingrain into them that they should respect, love, protect, honor, and never lie to women. He just hoped they would always keep his word.
"Pops?" Lionel's voice cut into Wayne's daze.
"Wassup kiddo?"
"Wayne?" Samantha called placing her hands on her hips and both boys laughed at the face he made. "Do you not hear your sons talking to you?" The slight frown on her caramel complexion made him smile. She was the epitome of natural beauty.
"I'm listening, look I'm gonna shower. We can resume this in a minute," bumping fists with the boys, Wayne stood and headed for the stairs.
Samantha shook her head and went back to preparing dinner.
"I got it!" Pharaoh cheered, throwing his hands up in a touchdown motion and Lionel chuckled looking down at his book.
"You gotta switch the s and u in dubiously P.J."
Frowning up his face, Pharaoh looked down at his work then at his brother and mugged him for ruining his moment. "Well, I'm only four."
"You'll be five in two days, nice try kid."
"Whatever, go somewhere else and let me focus," he dismissed him.
Chuckling, Lionel grabbed Pharaoh's hand when he rose it.
Before Pharaoh could take a swing at him Samantha stopped him. "Be nice and Lionel if you're gonna sit with him stop tormenting him," she scolded.
Lionel playfully mugged Pharaoh but remained seated. Smiling, Samantha shook her head and resumed tending to the food.
The sounds of a loud rumble woke Lionel from his peaceful sleep. He was dreaming about Nia Long and him citing vows before the noise interrupted their kiss.
"Li!" Wayne whispered-yelled, barging into the room as another loud boom shook the house.
"Go get your brother and go to the safe space and stay quiet"
Nodding, Lionel jumped up and followed his father out of the room. Both running in opposite directions, Lionel shook a sleeping Pharaoh up and without saying anything, dragged him into his second closet.
"We have to be still and quiet, like in freeze tag ok?" Lionel was terrified, but he kept a brave face for his baby brother.
"Al... alright," sleep was still evident in Pharaoh's voice as gunshots rang out.
Quickly, the pair moved the hidden door and climbed inside. Lionel grabbed the soundproof headphones and placed them on Pharaoh while he used his hands to drown out the disheartening noise.
3 hours after hearing the intruders tear up the house, both of the closets and more gunshots; a shaky Lionel pushed the door to the side. Pharaoh's neat clothes were now all over the floor, along with his toys and sneakers. The bed was flipped over and his dresser was emptied; it looked as if a tornado hit.
"Stay here," He asserted.
Pharaoh nodded and watched as his brother disappeared while he sat there with a rapidly beating heart. Any minute now and he was sure he would pass out.
Fifteen minutes had gone by and a wet face, angry Lionel rushed back and grabbed the duffel bag they sat on. "Grab your shoes, put on your coat, and keep your eyes closed as do NOT let go of my hand. I'm gonna call Nana when we get to the Payphone."
What began as a great day, turned into a horrid night for both boys, one that both would never forget...

If you are a new reader, don't be confused by the older comments. I published this in 2019 then took it down, but now it's here to stayyyy lol! I also have stuff in certain chapters about "songs to listen to" you don't have to follow that list, that's just something I thought would help set the tone of each chapter.
Happy reading! 🫣💕
