“Babe, come with me.”
I shook my head, and his voice became whiny.
“it's just for today! Why are you so stubborn?”
“Nah, I'm really not interested.” I ignored the last part of his statement and continued,”But have fun though.”
His tone changed, and his voice hardened. “This is why I can't get along with your lame ass. It's always one sorry excuse or the other. I don't even know what makes you think you can just brush me off like…”
I tuned him out, watching, without really listening as he got worked up. I was really good at it too, until his raised voice caught my attention, and I sighed, knowing what was going to happen next.
“You're ignoring me? You?” His voice dripped with derision and I got up, heading to the bathroom.
“Leave me alone, Devon, I'm not in the mood for this.”
His face contorted with anger, and I curled up immediately, detached as he hit me over and over again. Devon never touched my face, he didn't want people asking questions, so his focus was always on my back, stomach and thighs. It stopped hurting a long time ago, and I waited with dry eyes for him to stop.
He stepped away, and walked to the closet calmly rifling through my clothes, humming to himself, before bringing a white dress, a pair of black Michael Kors sandals, and I noticed, with twisted humor, a wig.
“You have thirty minutes to get dressed and meet me downstairs. I wouldn't be late if I were you.” Halfway out of the room, he added, “Oh, and clean yourself up, you're a mess.”
The door closed, and with the sound, something in me snapped. I was done with this, and although I understood that we both came from broken homes, I was done with depression making a home in me.
Apart from Devon, I had no one else. Except my not so little friend, Depresso, and the demons I battled with every day. And I was done with them all.
My thoughts went to the Tylenol bottle.
A good number of pills ingested, I ran myself a cold bath and hopped in. The cold water was soothing, and I slipped further in, welcoming darkness.
I died. The demons won.
