What happens when you wake up in a stranger than strange world with no recollection of who you are? The world of a game, which is very absurd, even in imagination. Evy knows her name because of the tag in her pocket. She somehow recognizes her name...
He was distraught. He never thought that his worst nightmare would compare to what he was experiencing now. Utter pain in his heart. It consumed him completely and his heart was clenching into itself until he was sure there would be nothing left of him. No pain anymore, he thought. One moment he was the happiest person on the earth and then the tragedy engulfed him. His vision blurred and he lost his balance. He took out many objects from his desk with his fall. The paper weight shattered and the glass covered the floor. But nothing happened to her. She did not move and he felt himself dying again. She was his, everything. He never knew how dying felt till that moment because he was experiencing death every time he looked at her. He had to act fast. There wasn't much time. He rubbed his eyes and thought fast. She was different from everyone. She was the strongest girl he knew. She wouldn't leave him like this.
He searched for something that would help him. He never wanted to be different, but he desperately wished now that he had powers so he could revive her. He saw the computer screen hovering ten feet away. That was the game they had worked together. It was one of a kind with his programming and her magical skills. She had poured some of her magical essence in the game so the players would feel like it was real. It was mere days ago when they were laughing carelessly and working on it. He remembered her laugh and the way her eyes sparkled when they worked on the realistic game. She had told him that she was alive in the game unlike the other characters who were playing as their avatars. They attributed that to the fact that she was magical. He hoped his crazy idea would work. The magic in the game would recognize the owner and keep her alive.
He connected the game to her and waited. He realised he had lost and stumbled back. The glass pierced his foot and he felt blood oozing out. That physical pain was nothing compared to the emotional turmoil within him. He knew there was nothing in his life without her. He moved forward to look at her for the last time and stroked her hair. Tears rolled down his face and he struggled to breathe.
He looked at her and saw her eyelids twitch. He was hallucinating now. He hoped that she was really responding to her residual magic and not his mind playing tricks on him. He prayed to anyone who might listen.
"Hello!"
He looked at the screen and saw her when he heard her voice. It was her. She was alive in the magical world. He could see her confused expression. She wasn't gone. If he could keep her alive in the game, someday she would wake up in the real world. He would find the cure. He wouldn't let her die. He vowed to find the person responsible for her near death.
Seeing her face made him hopeful. Her magic had healed her. He would never allow anything to harm her. Not as long as he was alive. And he would make sure that it wouldn't happen even when he stopped breathing. He had to find out what had happened to her first.
